Hitchhiking north is a German youth film by Wolfgang Hübner from 1977.

action

The young Gunnar wants to bring the duffel bag from Berlin to Rostock for his older brother, who is a sailor , so that the brother can spend another day with his girlfriend in Zerbst . Gunnar decides to hitchhike the route; in two days he has to be in Rostock. A retired professor takes him the first stretch on his motorcycle. During the journey, 13-year-old Teresa, who missed the train to Altkirch to the holiday camp, also gets on. Gunnar isn't thrilled to hitchhike north with a girl, especially since the younger Teresa turns out to be smarter than him. Gunnar soon tries to win their respect through courageous actions. During a detour to a bathing lake, he jumps from the five-meter tower, but everyone laughs at him when he slaps his stomach. Gunnar also fails in the subsequent boxing match due to a lack of technique.

Back on the street, both are picked up by a pastor who gently but firmly resolves Gunnar's prejudices about the church. Both young people are shocked when they learn that the pastor is on his way to help a dying person in his last hours. From the village to where they were taken, both of them set off further north. In a meadow, they believe they see a dead man who turns out to be the sleeping actor Mr.Paw. Teresa is thrilled, she has seen him several times in the theater. Mr. Paw has a plate and Gunnar makes a driver who has held, from changing the wheel. Meanwhile, Mr.Patze entertains Teresa with recitations, and later drives on with her. Gunnar stays behind with the truck driver. Both talk about women until Gunnar is taken away by soldiers. On his way further Gunnar meets Mr. Hurtig, whose Mercedes he admires. Hurtig promises to take him to Rostock, but with Gunnar's help he wants to steal from old Frau Busenius beforehand. Gunnar notifies the ABV and Mr. Hurtig is arrested. On his further way, Gunnar is taken by a group of cyclists from Thuringia and finally meets Teresa again. With her he now wants to go north to the end. In the evening both of them spend the night in a large haystack, where a group of harvest workers suddenly appears well before dawn. Their spokeswoman Lucie finally gets the motorcyclist Eberhard to drive Teresa and Gunnar to Altkirch. Teresa arrives at the summer camp on time. Gunnar, on the other hand, now only needs an hour's walk to Rostock. When Eberhard left, however, Gunnar notices that the duffel bag is still with the haystack. He makes his way back on foot.

Hitchhiking north is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Gerhard Holtz-Baumert . The film was shot in 1977 by DEFA on behalf of East German television . The costumes were created by Marianne Schmidt and Lieselotte Seiffert , the film construction came from Erich Krüllke and Hans-Jürgen Deponte . The film was shown for the first time on December 26, 1977 on GDR 1 on GDR television. It is one of the few DEFA television films that also ran in theaters: It was released on June 1, 1979. Icestorm released the film on DVD in July 2013.

criticism

The Free Press praised the film as a work "full of beautiful views, in which a new feeling, articulated sometimes loud sometimes quiet and always with beautiful, serene self-evident." For the service movie- was hitchhiking north a "television film for young audience ".

Award

At the 1979 Goldener Spatz children's film festival in Gera, Hitchhiking North received the special prize from the Ministry of Education.
