Transfer is a German science fiction film directed by Damir Lukačević based on a story by Elia Barceló .
action
Germany in the near future: Hermann Goldbeck and his wife Anna have lived a long, happy life together. Anna fell ill with cancer in old age and only had a few months to live. Her husband persuades her to take a radical new measure against aging.
At the genetic engineering company "Menzana", wealthy people can have their personality transferred into a new, young body and build on what they have already achieved in a second life.
Hermann and Anna buy the perfect bodies of a young African and a beautiful African woman.
However, it is not about empty shells that you can slip into carefree, but about real people who suppress their own consciousness with drugs and thus make room for the new spirit. Hermann and Anna now have their new bodies for twenty hours a day. The two Africans, on the other hand, only regain their own consciousness for four hours each night.
Apolain from Mali and Sarah from Ethiopia know what they are getting into. Their families have crossed the line of absolute need. In order to ensure their survival in Africa, they have decided to sell what little they have. The only thing of value in the European market is her body, which is so young, so attractive and healthy that one of the many millionaires from the western world wants to own it.
After the successful personality transfer, a new life begins for all four. While Hermann initially enjoys his newly acquired youth, Anna hesitantly approaches her new black identity.
In their nocturnal solitude, Sarah and Apolain find each other and fall in love. When Anna / Sarah unexpectedly become pregnant, the conflicts come to a head.
Out of love for Sarah, Apolain wants to escape her life in captivity. He manipulates the active ingredient capsules that ensure that the daily personality change works. Apolain tries to take over the life of Hermann and to kill the personalities of the two whites.
This attempt is detected by the Menzana surveillance system. Sarah and Apolain are captured and, after being brainwashed, returned to the "transfer" program.
For ethical reasons Anna and Hermann decide to return to their old bodies, which are frozen in two cryostasis tanks . During the return transfer, Hermann, who had previously announced that he would fight “Menzana” with all means, dies. Anna, who has only a little time left to live, ends up being left alone.
Differences to the template
The story takes place in Spain and the whites are accordingly Spanish. The bodies of the two elders are burned after the personality transference. A “return” is therefore impossible. The conflict between the whites and their “hosts” is less dramatic and consists mainly in the fact that the old man demands an abortion, which is rejected by the other three personalities. The child is finally born. At the end of the story there are 3,386 personality transfers and 514 children conceived in this way, and the world begins to grapple with legal, ethical and religious issues related to them.
Neither in the short story nor in the film adaptation is there a final statement as to whether a transfer of personality actually takes place or whether the personality grafted onto the host body is only a copy and the original body could live on as before without retransmission. In the second case, depending on the interpretation, the destruction of the original body would be viewed as suicide or aiding and abetting suicide or manslaughter , which would raise completely new ethical and moral problems. In the film version, this question is partially addressed, but not in the short story.
background
In order to find black actors who could cope with the demanding double role of the film, a search was first carried out in Germany, then the casting was extended to France, South Africa and England. Eventually the suitable actors were found in the USA. BJ Britt and Regine Nehy played their roles in English and were dubbed by Markus Pfeiffer and Nadeshda Brennicke .
The identification of four souls in two bodies was a great artistic challenge for the young actors, who both young Africans and old whites have to play in the bodies of young Africans. In the run-up to the shooting, the director Damir Lukačević organized a workshop with the two American actors and the German actors who play the white couple, Ingrid Andree and Hans-Michael Rehberg , in which the script was read together and the actors improvise Have appropriated characters.
The areas of image design, costume, equipment, sound design and composition also played a major role in order to ensure that the audience was able to find out which of the characters they are currently watching.
The work for Mehmet Kurtuluş , who was the old inventor Dr. Menzel, as well as his autistic son Laurin with heavily bleached hair and blue contact lenses.
According to the current state of knowledge, personality transmissions analogous to beaming are not possible due to fundamental quantum mechanical laws, since the measurement of one information state would destroy it, which in turn would have effects on the other states to be measured. Even an assumed technical progress could not solve this problem.
Reviews
“TRANSFER is a prime example of how one can open up a new dimension to the strained genre of science fiction films with intelligence and the will to style. Incidentally, this includes ironic nuances as well as discrete quotes from the classics of the genre: For example, the androgynous Cerberus of the ingenious inventor in the background. He is played by Mehmet Kurtuluş. In general, the actors in 'Transfer': Hans-Michael Rehberg, Ingrid Andree, Jeanette Hain and the American newcomers BJ Britt and Regine Nehy make the film worth seeing. "
“In order to create the creepy-beautiful new world of science fiction, the director Damir Lukačević does not need any complex special effects, but only cold light in antiseptic rooms and the hyper-real artificial images of the Red One digital camera. In the field of tension between black and white, poor and rich, third and first world, he stimulates a thoroughly explosive mind game, about colonial exploitation and human trafficking, about youth madness and consumer frenzy, about loss of identity and overcoming death. "
“Lukačević has given his film many levels, and he not only plays with it with virtuosity, he also brings them all to a clean end. Even pregnancy comes into play, which makes the four differentiated characters in the two bodies enter into strange coalitions. The African-Americans BJ Britt and Regine Nehy succeed in imitating the mature whites excellently, and this is how the illusion works - even if Ingrid Andree and Hans-Michael Rehberg sometimes walk a fine line when they recite their dialogues in a heavily accentuated tone, as on television . "
“In its ethical relevance and socio-critical complexity, the adaptation of a story by Elia Barceló combines elements of character drama , romance and moral allegory into a silent horror poem. The stirring science fiction fantasy doesn't need any visual gimmicks or garish effects for its human and moral parable. The minimalist staging reinforces the authenticity of the dramaturgical balancing act between romance and drama, the core conflict of which asks what it is: utopia or dystopia, pipe dream or nightmare? "
“The content of the film sometimes seems a bit overloaded. In addition to the two central discourses on identity and exploitation, the plot also touches on the debates on pre-implantation diagnostics and migration problems in the age of globalization. […] Overall, however, transfer is so fascinating and complex in terms of content that one can ignore such weaknesses. After all, only rarely do films reach the cinema that make philosophical topics so tangible through an entertaining and at the same time profound staging. "
