Trap (music style)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The music style Trap (English for trap ) or Trap Music is a subgenre of hip-hop that developed mainly in the southern United States. There it emerged from styles such as Down South and Crunk . Trap's musical roots go back to the 1990s. In the 2010s, a new variant , more strongly influenced by Electronic Dance Music (EDM), became popular and internationally known, which is also associated with the name Trap . This is also known as EDM Trap Music .

term

The name "trap" is a slang expression . In the US drug scene , it refers to the place where drug deals take place. The term first gained greater fame in the capital of Georgia , Atlanta . There it was used in song lyrics by local Dirty South collectives such as the Dungeon Family , OutKast and the Goodie Mob in the early 1990s and made famous. Listeners and critics began to refer to rappers whose main lyrical theme was drug trafficking as “trap rappers”. In 2003, southern rapper TI released the commercially successful album "Trap Muzik". This became a milestone in the development phase of a new hip-hop subgenre. Rappers with similar musical styles, such as Jeezy , Gucci Mane , Yo Gotti and Rick Ross , began to enjoy mainstream success. Trap thus developed into a recognized music genre in the mid-2000s.

Style features

Among the most distinctive stylistic features of the trap count the slow rhythms with very deep bass drums and fast, "rolling", typically as a thirty-second set hi-hats . The sound of the Roland TR-808 drum computer and a mostly gloomy, aggressive atmosphere, which is typical for the darker varieties of hip-hop, dominate the sound . An important compositional technique in the trap is screwing & chopping . The speed varies between 60 and 95 BPM ; programming is often done in double time .

In the hip-hop variant, pitched down voices and AdLibs (a kind of stylistic “trademark” of rappers ) are used. The texts typically refer to the urban ghetto and drug milieu. A style-defining track for the EDM variant of the Trap was the remix of Major Lazer's Original Don, produced by Flosstradamus in 2012 . In contrast to the original trap, numerous characteristic sounds from dubstep , brostep and electro-house or “ big room ” - including the drop typical of the “big room” - as well as samples of sirens, horns, pistols and clinking windows have been incorporated.
