(78071) Vicent is an asteroid of the main middle belt discovered on June 1, 2002 by the Spanish astronomer Rafael Ferrando at the Observatorio Pla D'Arguines ( IAU code 941) in Segorbe , Valencia province . An unconfirmed sighting (2001 EJ 22 ) of the asteroid had already occurred on March 20, 2001 as part of the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking project at the Haleakalā Observatory on Maui .
It is believed that the asteroid could more broadly belong to the Lydia family, a group of asteroids named after (110) Lydia - the orbit of (78071) Vicent's orbit around the Sun ( eccentricity ) is similar with a value of rounded 0.082 however less of an ideal circular orbit than those of typical Lydia asteroids (0.026 to 0.061). Furthermore, the timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (78071) Vicent are almost identical to those of the larger (assuming the absolute magnitude of 13.6 versus 15.2) asteroids (10172) Humphreys .
(78071) Vicent is named after Francesc Vicent , born in Segorbe , a Valencian author of the first known treatise on the modern game of chess , which is known in a print from 1495. The asteroid was named on September 28, 2004.
