Octoxinol 9 ( INN ) is a p - tert- octylphenol - derivative with a polyethylene glycol side chain of 9 to 10 ethylene oxide units. It is a nonionic surfactant from the group of octylphenol ethoxylates. Brand names from this series include Triton X-100 and Nonidet P40.
properties
Octoxinol 9 can change the melting behavior of DNA double strands. Due to its aromatic structure, it absorbs UV light and can falsify the result in photometric determinations using UV light.
use
Octoxinol 9 is used as a detergent in biochemistry . Since there proteins as opposed to SDS not denatured , it is in the protein purification used to membrane proteins in their native conformation of membrane extract. It is also used for virus inactivation of enveloped viruses by the solvent-detergent process .
Octoxinol 9 is used as a replacement substance for the spermicide Nonoxinol 9 and as a pharmaceutical excipient.
