Location of the Mainfranken barracks in Bavaria

The Mainfranken-Kaserne is a barracks of the armed forces base and the central medical service of the Bundeswehr in the Lower Franconian town of Volkach in the district of Kitzingen in the state of Bavaria. The barracks was the last Bundeswehr location in the Federal Republic of Germany to be built in the 1980s. The Volkach-Nordheim military training area in Nordheim am Main , originally part of the site, has since been closed.

history

The city of Volkach tried as early as the 1950s to create the conditions for establishing a Bundeswehr location. A city council resolution of April 8, 1959 made it possible to build a new barracks. Nevertheless, it was not until the 1960s that concrete plans were available. However, these plans were only realized in 1984, when construction of the Volkach barracks began.

First, the repair battalion 12 from Hardheim and Niederstetten moved into the buildings on April 28, 1986, and in the same year, on October 21, 1986, the engineer battalion 12 was also stationed . The soldiers had come to Mainfranken from Speyer on the Upper Rhine . Before that there was an almost complete replacement of the team, so that a "Franconian" battalion moved into the barracks.

On November 8, 1986, then Federal Defense Minister Manfred Wörner gave the new barracks its name. The Mainfranken barracks was the last new Bundeswehr base to be built in the Federal Republic and tried to win over the people of Volkach through the high environmental protection standards during construction. In particular, landscape protection and bird protection measures at the locations were implemented.

In addition, the soldiers established themselves as disaster relief workers in the 1980s . In March 1988 the engineer battalion 12 was engaged in flood operations in and around Volkach. After a few devastating storms in February and March 1990, the battalion established itself as a helper for foresters and, above all, repaired forest damage. After the accession of the GDR to the Federal Republic, however, a realignment of the Force, which was also felt in Volkach began.

After the German Armed Forces had increasingly completed peacekeeping missions abroad, in which Volkach soldiers were also involved, the 12th Engineer Battalion was withdrawn from Volkach in 2004. However, as early as 2002 the repair battalion 466 had been stationed in the Mainfranken barracks. Since April 2006 the Logistics Battalion 467 has also been established here. After the suspension of conscription in 2011, the repair battalion was disbanded. Only the 467 logistics battalion remained in Volkach.

The Pioneer Battalion 12, which initially moved into the Mainfranken barracks, consisted of a total of five companies . In addition to the headquarters and supply company , to which a small motor vehicle group was attached, there were a total of three combat companies . They each consisted of around 110 soldiers and specialized in different types of work. In addition to the pioneer and bridge forces, a pioneer diving group and a translation group were also organized in the 5th Company .

General structure of Pioneer Battalion 12 in Volkach (1990):

  • 1st Company: Headquarters and Supply Company
  • 2nd Company: Overcoming waters
  • 3rd Company: Blow up
  • 4th Company: Air Supply
  • 5th Company: Pioneer and Bridge Company (with diving and translating group)

In 2009, around 1,700 soldiers served in Volkach, many of them from the new federal states . In addition to the military, 43 civilian employees were employed here. In addition to the two battalions, the Veitshöchheim medical center had a branch in Volkach. It was established in 1994 and converted into a paramedic unit in 2005 , which, in addition to medical treatment, also ensured health examinations for missions abroad .

The Logistic Control Center 7 (LogSt7) ensured the supply of the troops at the site and also coordinated the distribution of food in the barracks. A sergeant for reservist matters (FwRes) had his seat at the location. A reservists association, organized in the Association of Reservists of the German Federal Armed Forces (VdRBw), was also established. The Volkach location service was responsible for advising the soldiers on financial matters and for paying their salaries.

General structure of the repair battalion 466 in Volkach (2009):

  • 1st company: approx. 125 soldiers, staff and supply company
  • 2nd company: approx. 149 soldiers, system repair
  • 3rd company: repairing damaged equipment
  • 4th Company: approx. 148 soldiers, system repairs during intervention operations
  • 5th Company: rescue, testing, battle repairs

General structure of logistics battalion 467 in Volkach (2009):

  • 1st Company: Headquarters and Supply Company
  • 2nd / 3rd Company: Mixed supply companies
  • 4th Company: support the intervention forces
  • 5th Company: Repair of military equipment
  • 6th Company: Operations as part of the NATO Response Force

In the course of the expansion of the Bundeswehr's area of responsibility and the establishment of missions abroad, Volkach soldiers also served. The repair battalion 466 sent 21 men and women to Kosovo ( KFOR ), 18 soldiers accompanied the mission in Afghanistan ( ISAF ). In addition, the logistics battalion provided 467 forces for the NATO Response Force (NRF) and for the EU battlegroups . In 2013 the soldiers provided logistical support for the Active Fence Turkey (AFT).

Volkach-Nordheim military training area

A shooting range was created in the immediate vicinity of the barracks at Halbmeilensee . The military training area of the Mainfranken barracks was planned between the city of Volkach and the nearby municipality of Nordheim am Main. Since water areas had to be available for the pioneer exercises, those responsible wanted to establish the exercise area on the so-called Altmain. Therefore, as of 1985 there were protests of the local winemakers , because the conservation area Volkacher Mainschleife was affected by the construction. The winemakers even lodged a constitutional complaint , but failed.

The protests were probably also the reason why environmental standards were increasingly taken into account during construction. Three new biotopes were created at the water exercise area and the remaining areas were maintained without fertilizers or weed killers. In addition to other bird protection measures, such as 118 nest boxes in the facades of the buildings, entry slits for rare species of bats were created and a steep wall was built for the sand martin .

After the withdrawal of the engineer battalion, the repair battalion and the reorganization of the logistics battalion 467 as part of the Bundeswehr reform , the buildings in Nordheim were empty from spring 2015. During the refugee crisis it was initially planned to take care of 400 refugees in the open halls. After the community of Nordheim protested because of its small size, the number of refugees was limited to 200 people.
