Twisted Chords is an independent label from Karlsruhe that has released records and CDs from the fields of punk rock , hardcore , German punk, screamo, crust , hip-hop and ska . Twisted Chords began as a cassette label in 1995/1996, and finally released a recording on CD for the first time in May 1996.
In addition to the stylistic breadth, what is characteristic of Twisted Chords is the need to offer a forum for political artists in particular. In recent years, records from Chaoze One , Sin Dios , Inner Conflict , Rifu , Across the Border , Rogue Steady Orchestra , Ya Basta! , MDC , Amen 81 , Drunk, The trick is to breathe , No No No , Guerilla, duesenjaeger , Kaput Krauts , Das Flug and numerous other politically active musicians. Not every band has to be political, but the “political and social attitude, the music and the lyrics and the people” are important. The advertising slogan “More than Music” is also understood in this sense.
history
After the publication of a few small editions of cassette samplers, Twisted Chords published a CD by the Karlsruhe local band Simuinasiwo for the first time in May 1996 . This was followed by more CDs and records, mainly from local bands, and a few samplers , before the label began to take on international bands.
In the early years, the label worked exclusively in self-distribution, until distribution contracts were finally concluded in 2003-2005 with Broken Silence Distribution (D / A / CH), Sonic Rendezvous (Benelux) and Cargo Music (USA). To this day, Twisted Chords attaches great importance to being musically open and not to one (sub) genre. The majority of the label releases come from the fields of punk and hardcore, other releases come from the genres Ska and Hip-Hop , for example releases by the Mannheim rapper Chaoze One or the French ska band Ya Basta! . Twisted Chords released two albums with the Spanish hardcore punk band Sin Dios . The business relationship failed because of an unreflective text about the Middle East conflict in which Jews were described as child murderers.
A mailorder was added at the end of the 1990s , through which, in addition to the label's publications, other sound carriers as well as T-shirts, buttons, patches and books can be purchased. The mailorder list, which initially appeared on paper, was replaced by a web shop in 2002 .
In addition, Twisted Chords repeatedly initiates concerts, tours and so-called label parties. The first label parties took place in the Karlsruhe ex-Steffi from 1997 and are repeated to this day at irregular intervals and with changing venues. In addition, a CD sampler with a look back at the beginnings of the label was released in 2006 for the 10th anniversary and a tour with the bands Guerilla, Chaoze One and Lütten was organized on the occasion . In autumn / winter 2008 the idea of the label tour was taken up again when several bands appeared for a total of 7 dates in Hamburg, Berlin, Schwäbisch Gmünd, Ludwigsburg, Höhr-Grenzhausen, Leverkusen and Frankfurt. A continuation took place from September to December 2009. A two-day final festival followed in Rastatt (Baden-Württemberg).
There are various details about the origin of the name Twisted Chords, including a record by the Hamburg group Rubbermaids with the same title. In an interview with the Plastic Bomb -Fanzine, however, the operators assert that they only became aware of the Rubbermaids record after the label was founded.
