Ulrich Ludat (born August 15, 1959 in Öhringen ) is a German composer and performance artist . His fields of work include composition of contemporary (experimental) music, photography , video art , field recording , installation , intervention and performance .

biography

Ludat grew up in and near Hamburg, later continued his school days in Northeim until he graduated from high school and initially studied Romance languages , philosophy and musicology at universities in Germany and Italy from 1978 to 1984 . From 1986 to 1990 he studied instrumental subjects ( recorder , viola ) in Saarbrücken at the Hochschule für Musik Saar , where he also took part in courses in Theo Brandmüller's composition class. From 1990 to 1999 he taught as an instrumental teacher at various local music schools in Saarland and Baden-Württemberg. In 2005 he held an interim teaching position at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg , where he had started his professional music training at the time. He then worked as a temporary substitute at general schools (comprehensive school, grammar school) in Kaiserslautern and Neunkirchen (Saar) in the field of music. Ludat temporarily put his own creative activity behind his work as an instrumental interpreter and performer, especially with the "ensemble for amazing music" archae.o.pteryx (1990-2006). For this he received the cultural grant of the state capital Saarbrücken in 1994. From 2003 the composing activity intensified. From 2007 at the latest, his artistic work is dominated by the forms of expression that are more attributable to the visual arts (including photography, video / film, so-called long-term performances). Ludat's catalog raisonné now includes a good 500 titles. He lives and works as a freelance artist in Saarbrücken and was a member of the Saarländisches Künstlerhaus from 2014 to 2019 .

Artistic work

Ludat has been a guest artist at the Institute for Music at the ZKM in Karlsruhe on several occasions , where he worked on the production of audio feeds for his compositions. In 2008 and 2009 Ludat stayed in Georgia for artistic work , where he carried out filming and photographic studies for a long-term performance for the 100th anniversary of Saarbrücken as a city in 2009. In 2012 he spent three months as Artist in Residence in Buenos Aires at the Fundación 'ace , where, inspired by three Brazilian artists of the 20th century, he incorporated the capital district, conducted field recording and created photographic and video works, some of which were in exhibitions in Buenos Aires and Saarbrücken was presented to the public. In 2018 he won the “ Manifesta 12 Prize for Photography” in Palermo, which will be awarded to him in 2020 at the opening of Manifesta 13 in Marseille.
