Ulrich Tholuck , actually Hans-Ulrich Tholuck , (born June 25, 1944 , † August 10, 2009 in Oberhausen ) was a German educator . From 1997 until his death he was the headmaster of the Landfermann-Gymnasium in Duisburg . As a public relations officer for the Philologists' Association of North Rhine-Westphalia and as a committed educator, he was a frequent contact for the mass media on educational issues and was therefore also known nationwide. He was an honorary professor at Sichuan University in China .

Life and career

Ulrich Tholuck attended elementary school in Eschborn and Heiligkreuzsteinach, the humanistic grammar school in Heidelberg (in the boarding school of the Melanchthon Association) and the Heinrich von Gagern grammar school in Frankfurt am Main . After graduating from high school, he studied law , political science and classical philology with the subjects archeology, Greek, Latin and history in Frankfurt am Main and Marburg . After passing the 2nd state examination in 1978, he was employed at the Leibniz Gymnasium in Essen .

Tholuck was committed to his profession and was, among other things, a member of the main staff council at the NRW Schools Ministry for the Philology Association of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1987 and a member of the staff council for teachers at grammar schools at the Düsseldorf district government from 1990 . From 1991 to 1997 he was the first deputy chairman of this body. In addition, he was a member of the overall board and spokesman for the Association of Philologists in North Rhine-Westphalia as well as a public relations and media officer at the North Rhine-Westphalian Teachers' Association, a cooperation between the Association of Philologists in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Association of Real School Teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia. He was also editor of Education Current ; a journal of the Philologists Association of North Rhine-Westphalia, which appears eight times a year with a circulation of approx. 20,000 copies by Pädagogik & Hochschul Verlag , Düsseldorf.

On educational issues, he was a frequent contact person for the mass media on radio , television and in print media (such as at Deutschlandfunk in Deutschlandradio Kultur , WDR , RTL television in the television magazine stern tv , the news magazine Focus , the Kölnische Rundschau , the Kölner Stadt- Anzeiger , at the NRZ , at the Rheinische Post and at the WAZ ) and achieved national recognition.

Since 1997 he has been the headmaster of the Landfermann-Gymnasium in Duisburg . During this time, partnerships with other schools in Chengdu (China) and Kaliningrad (Russia) were established. Tholuck was chairman of the board of trustees of the Collegium Fridericianum Rosemarie and Wolfgang Simon Foundation , founded in 2001 , which among other things promotes sponsorship for the former Collegium Fridericianum in the former Königsberg (today: Kaliningrad ) and promotes international understanding. In 2008 he was appointed honorary professor of the Sichuan University in the People's Republic of China for his special merits in the further development of Sino-German friendship and the deepening of mutual understanding of culture and language .

Tholuck was considered extremely strict by students. In an appraisal written on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death and published in November 2010 in the Landfermann-Blätter , which summarized his merits, Tholuck was also referred to as a polarizer , who summed up the high school educational mandate , as he understood it, to the formula: “Efficiency to challenge and to encourage motivation ”.

Ulrich Tholuck died unexpectedly on August 10, 2009. He was married and had a daughter.
