Rif Dimaschq ( Arabic ریف دمشق, DMG Rīf Dimašq 'Damascus Land') is a governorate in southwest Syria . It has an area of 18,032 square kilometers and 1,409,520 residents. The capital is Damascus , which forms an independent government. The largest city in the Rif Dimaschq governorate is Duma with 114,761 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2006). Other major cities in this governorate are Darayya west of Damascus, Jaramana southeast of Damascus, Harasta and Irbin .
Geographical location
Rif Dimaschq borders in the southwest on the governorates of Quneitra , Dar'a and as-Suwaida , in the north and northeast on the Governorate of Homs , in the west on the Republic of Lebanon and in the south on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan . The Damascus Governorate is completely enclosed by the Rif Dimaschq Governorate.
