The Umiak I is a bulk carrier with special icebreaking capabilities. The ship sails under the flag of Canada .

details

The ship was built at the Universal Shipbuilding Corporation shipyard in Maizuru , Japan . The keel was laid on August 2nd, the launch on November 14th, 2005. The ship was completed on April 13, 2006.

The ship is owned by Fednav Limited in Montreal, Canada , which is part of the Fednav Group . It is managed by the company Canship Ugland Ltd. in St. John's , Newfoundland .

The ship, which has the ice class DNV ICE-15, is designed for sailing in polar waters. The special shape of the hull enables it to break ice up to 1.5 meters thick.

Fednav had the ship built specifically for the transport of nickel concentrate from the mines in northern Labrador to the Saint Lawrence River . Since it is independent of icebreakers when the ice conditions are appropriate , it can call at Edward's Cove loading port in Labrador almost all year round. This is only ice-free for about five months a year.

On the return voyage to Edward's Cove, the ship often carries equipment and supplies for the nickel mines.

Equipment and technology

The propulsion of the ship consists of a low -speed seven-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine of the type MAN 7S70ME-C with an output of 21,770 kilowatts , which is built under license by Hitachi and acts directly on a controllable  pitch propeller . The ship thus reaches a maximum speed of 13.5  knots . In open water, this only requires 35 percent of the machine's output. In young ice no more than 1.5 meters thick, the ship can reach speeds of up to 3 knots. The propeller runs in a Kort nozzle as protection and to achieve higher thrust. Three MAN 6L23 / 30H diesel engines and an emergency diesel of the type Cummins Inc. 6CTA-8.3-D (M) are installed as auxiliary diesel .

The ship has five holds that can be closed with hydraulic hatch covers from McGregor. The granular space of the five rooms is 40,490 m³, the ball room 38,855 m³.

Three ship cranes are installed for the cargo handling, which is independent of the port superstructure . The cranes are located amidships between hatches 1 and 2, 3 and 4 and 4 and 5. Crane 1 has a capacity of 50 t, Crane 2 and 3 of 30 t each.

The deck superstructures are in the rear third of the ship.

Trivia

The ship was the subject of the documentary series "Mighty Ships" on the Discovery Channel .
