Toponymy

Umuarama is a neologism coined in 1927 by the Romanist Francisco da Silveira Bueno from elements of the Tupí-Guaraní languages , which he thought would mean "a sunny place to meet friends" . The Tupí word elements are embu : place; ara : day, light; ama : suffix for meeting, assembly. The place received the city nickname Capital of Friendship ( Capital da Amizade ).

history

The territory of today's Umuarama was traditional settlement area of the indigenous people from the Xetá tribe (spellings also Hetá, Chetá, Setá). Originally estimated at 300 to 400 Indios, they were already considered extinct in the 1950s due to the colonization policy and genocide in Paraná, in 1998/99 there were still eight members of the tribe and in 2014 they had grown again to 69 Indios, who in the around 3000 Hectare of the Terra Indígena Herarekã Xetá Indian reservation , north of the Umuarama district of Serra dos Dourades .

In 1949 the Serviço de Proteção ao Índio (SPI; dt. Service for the Protection of Indians ; today the Fundação Nacional do Índio ) started an expedition to the Xetá area and set up a supply station in the area of today's Umuarama. The Mata Atlântica on the Guarapuava plateau , the Terceiro planalto paranaense , was considered fertile and suitable for growing coffee . The for-profit colonization company Companhia Melhoramentos Norte do Paraná acquired around 40,000 hectares of uncultivated land from the state at low prices in 1955 and parceled it out for colonization. In return, the company promised the creation of infrastructures such as the construction of town halls, schools, post offices, bus and train stations. She founded 63 cities in Paraná.

On April 24, 1955, the area was subordinated to the District of Cruzeiro de Oeste as Distrito de Umuarama . The town was given municipal independence on July 25, 1960 by law No. 4.245 and was spun off from Cruzeiro de Oeste. The self-government came into force on November 15, 1961. During the coffee boom, Umuarama had around 150,000 residents, after the boom the population shrank considerably, only to decrease by 10% in the 1990s, and has been growing again since around 2005 . The deforestation has partially led to soil erosion. The service sector, followed by industry and agriculture, are the main branches of the economy, with the service sector accounting for the largest share of the urban national product.
