Detour home (Original title: The Fundamentals of Caring ) is an American road movie by Rob Burnett from 2016 . The film, with Paul Rudd , Selena Gomez and Craig Roberts in the leading roles, is based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Evison . The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2016 .

After a few blows of fate, Ben Benjamin decides to take a course on nursing and pastoral care. Not only does he earn money, he also gets to know the young, 18-year-old Trevor, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy . The two men get closer and become friends. You decide to go on a road trip through the western states of the USA. During their trip, they get to know all kinds of people, including the adventurous Dot, who they pick up at a gas station dinner. Dot not only turns Trevor's head, but also shows them that there is still hope for a new, better life.

Background and cast

In October 2012, Rob Burnett and Jon Beckerman from the production company Worldwide Pants secured the rights to the 2012 novel The Fundamentals of Caring by Jonathan Evison. Burnett was then hired to adapt and direct the novel as a film. In January 2015, Paul Rudd was cast in the lead role. A few days later, Selena Gomez was hired for the female lead.

In December 2015, the original film title was changed from The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving to The Fundamentals of Caring .

Filming

Filming began on January 22, 2015 in Atlanta , Georgia . In February it was also shot in Cartersville . After 26 days of shooting, production ended on February 26, 2015.

premiere

The film premiered on January 29, 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival . The streaming service Netflix has secured the international distribution rights to the film for seven million dollars. The film has been available worldwide on Netflix since June 24, 2016.

reception

The film received positive reviews from many critics shortly after its premiere. Leslie Felperin said that the feature film was "fundamentally flawed". The Variety reporter Geoff Berkshire ruled that there was "solid acting" and "places extremely honest-sharp-tongued humor."
