Universal DOG

The Universal DOG was a nightclub on the premises of Lahr airport in Baden-Württemberg Lahr . It was located in a former Canadian armed forces clubhouse.

The discotheque building initially served the Canadian armed forces in Lahr as a cinema and casino, which was also reminiscent of the sloping floor in the main part of the building. After the Canadians left, part of the building was used as a restaurant (American Diner) and the cinema screening room was converted into a skate park.

Classification

The discotheque was divided into four large areas. The hall was the largest part and offered space for up to 2000 guests. In addition to 4 bars for serving drinks, there was also a VIP lounge, from which the raised stage was clearly visible. A film screen made it possible to show films outside of normal operations. The home base (previously Mantis) was to the left of the entrance and offered space for around 300 visitors on around 300 square meters. The CLUB (previously RED DOG) was intended to celebrate in a small, alternative group and offered space for 350 visitors. It also had sanitary facilities and a separate entrance. There was also an outside area in the DOG.

After major renovations, the building was divided into various discos in 2015. The RED DOG became a cheerful pub club, the MANTIS / HOMEBASE became Hans Dampf. An open air location was also set up called HOLZMARKT 77 (the number 77 depends on the postcode)

History of origin and naming

The Universal DOG was founded in 1998 by three men who longed for a cultural venue in the Ortenau region. From the beginning, the plan was not just to open a discotheque, but a location that is “universal” and creates space for concerts. Since the founders had little financial means at the beginning, a decision was made in addition to the word "universal" in the name to use a combination of letters that expresses this. The second part of the name, DOG, stood for three without money. In November 2013 the discotheque celebrated its 15th anniversary. On January 6, 2018, the last event in the Universal DOG took place under the motto This is the end , after which the owners stopped operating the discotheque.

The Universal DOG's discotheque was closed on January 6, 2018.
