The nature reserve (NSG) Lower Valley / Haldenrain located on the left Neckar shore between Ingersheim and Mundelsheim in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg and has ha size of 18.5.

The NSG in the natural area of the Neckar Basin is around 70% on Ingersheimer and around 30% on Mundelsheimer municipality. It includes the wetland in the Gewann Unteres Tal and the wooded steep slope Haldenrain .

From the 1930s to the 1960s, gravel was dredged in the Gewann Lower Valley . The gravel pits in the southern part were filled with sewage sludge . At first, no load-bearing surface layer could be applied to the sludge, which is why waste from the linoleum works in nearby Bietigheim-Bissingen was deposited. In the following period, however, no orderly agricultural use was possible despite the following application of humus , the terrain settled and bulged. In 1976 the state of Baden-Württemberg bought an area in the northern part. Only sludge had been poured into these gravel pits until 1976 without any of the other measures taken afterwards. In the years that followed, the country bought more land and began maintenance measures; a water surface was created, trees felled and the terrain was planted. Finally, in 1987, the nature reserve was established.

The wet biotope now replaces the floodplains on the Neckar , which have since been eliminated . With reed -covered shore and woods and cm between ten and 80 deep lakes offer various waterfowl species hiding and breeding sites. In addition, rare birds use the area during bird migration and for wintering.

On the Haldenrain steep slope immediately to the west and north of the Gewann Unteres Tal , stones were partially broken and wine was grown. The shell limestone quarries were in operation until the end of the First World War ; the vineyards in the northern part of the protected area were cultivated until the 1950s. The species-rich succession deciduous forest still harbors well-preserved dry stone walls in the northern area; it is younger than the southern part of the forest, where only remnants of walls can be found.

Together, the areas of the wetland and the wooded steep slope form a biocenosis that cannot be found in the wider area.

The protection purpose stated in the ordinance on the nature reserve:

  • for the lower valley the preservation of a species-rich, area-specific flora and fauna as well
  • the protection of species-rich, extensively used deciduous forests as habitats for the characteristic flora and fauna for the wooded steep slope Haldenrain .
