The nature reserve (NSG) Unterer See and the surrounding area is located immediately east of Horrheim in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg .
Half of the NSG in the natural area of the Neckar Basin is located in the municipal area of Vaihingen an der Enz and Sersheim . In addition, its area is completely in the Stromberg-Heuchelberg nature park and is almost completely surrounded by protected landscape areas . Most of it is located in the Stromberg FFH area and in the Stromberg bird sanctuary . A small part of it is also overlaid with a natural monument on the Metter .
The center of the 61.5 hectare area is formed by a wet biotope consisting of a few ponds. The banks are lined with extensive reed and sedge areas. Since the 1930s, the area has been drained for agricultural use. However, it turned out that despite the drainage there was no profitable agriculture. From 1970, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu) bought parts of the site and renatured it. Since then, the Nabu has also taken care of the maintenance of the site; for example by regular clearing work to prevent the open wet meadows near the water from becoming overgrown. In 1989 the area was finally designated as a nature reserve.
The area is home to a number of rare plant and animal species. The flesh-colored orchid and the dull-flowered bulrush , for example, thrive in the wet and tall herbaceous meadows . Bird species such as the pond rail , the water rail , the common snipe , the red backed killer , the oriole , the tree falcon , the black woodpecker and the middle woodpecker find their nesting places here.
