The nature reserve lies between Bissingen , Markgröningen and the Unterriexingen district . It runs through the lower section of the Leudelsbachtal called Remminger Tal , a piece along the Enz and includes large parts of the Rotenackers on the plateau adjacent to the east. The majority of the protected area with an area of 117.9 hectares, which was declared in 2011 against initial resistance in the Markgröninger municipal council,  is around 98.4 hectares on the Markgröninger mark; around 19.4 hectares are located in the area of the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen.

The nature reserve is surrounded by the Enztal nature reserve between the Leinfelder Hof and Bietigheim-Bissingen , except for a small part on the eastern and southern edges of the Rotenackerspitze .

Protection purpose

In the ordinance, the conservation, safeguarding and development of the richly structured shell limestone landscape around the Leudelsbach with its small-scale mosaic of historically rooted and in part endangered biotope types is specified as the protection purpose.

The ordinance also specifies the protective purpose:

  • the preservation of the habitats occurring in the area according to Annex I of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive (FFH Directive), in particular the habitat types limestone grasslands - orchid-rich stands , ravine and mixed hillside forests , alluvial forests with alder, ash and willow ,
  • the conservation of wild animals and plants according to Annex II of the Habitats Directive (in particular the Spanish flag ).

Bannwald Rotenacker

In the forest reserve Bannwald Rotenacker on the slope above the Enz, which is one of the core zones of the nature reserve, the uninfluenced development must be ensured and its scientific observation guaranteed. This area is a habitat for plants such as the Türkenbundlilie ( Lilium martagon ) and the Seidelbast ( Daphne mezereum ).

Sheep pastures with a great variety of plants

Along the sun-exposed slope edge of the Leudelsbach valley ran a wide shaft drive or Herdweg , which has been owned by the town of Markgröningen since ancient times and connected the steep pastures on the right slope of the valley. The remaining relics along the Rotenackers are kept open through maintenance measures. A striking old summer linden tree on the side of the path is protected as a natural monument ND25 / 09. In addition to various orchids such as the Military Orchid ( Orchis militaris ) is very common place here over 200 other plant species that Cowslip ( Primula veris ) and the mountain Heller herb ( Thlaspi montanum ), but also endangered Callus dandelions as Reddened Dandelion ( Taraxacum rubicundum ) , Plum- colored dandelions ( Taraxacum bellicum ) and split- leaved dandelions ( Taraxacum lacistophyllum ). The stinking hellebore ( Helleborus foetidus ) occurs in areas where the sheep pastures are neglected.

Former vineyards

The Lower Nature Conservation Authority, the nature conservation officer of the town of Markgröningen and the local BUND group are responsible for keeping the former vineyards open, which once shaped the character of the steep Remminger Valley in the area of the Upper Wannenberg district . Dry stone walls are also being restored or rebuilt in order to maintain the cultural landscape and as valuable biotopes .

Predecessor nature reserve "Hammelrain / Oberer Wannenberg"

Before the Leudelsbachtal nature reserve was designated, there was a "Hammelrain / Oberer Wannenberg" nature reserve (identifier: 1.073). This three-part area had a total size of around 18.75 hectares. It was located on the slopes of the Leudelsbach valley, which fell to the south-west and west, and which was cut into the shell limestone , exclusively in the municipality of Markgröningen. This nature reserve, which was established on April 20, 1979, had the purpose of preserving and caring for the three sub-areas that are ornithologically, entomologically and botanically of the greatest ecological, scientific and scenic importance and serve as a habitat for threatened flora and fauna. With the entry into force of the ordinance on the Leudelsbachtal nature reserve, the ordinance on the Hammelrain / Oberer Wannenberg nature reserve expired. The area of the former "Hammelrain / Oberer Wannenberg" nature reserve was completely incorporated into the new nature reserve.
