Location of Okhotsk Sub-prefecture

Okhotsk (spoken similarly to Okhotsk , Japanese. オ ホ ー ツ ク 総 合 振興 局 , Ohōtsuku-sōgō-shinkō-kyoku ) is a sub- prefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture . It has an area of ​​10,690.09 km² and a population of 329,446 (as of July 31, 2004).

It borders in the north on the Sea of ​​Okhotsk ( Ohōtsuku-kai ).

history

The administrative unit was set up in 1897 as the Abashiri Sub-prefecture ( 網 走 支 庁 , Abashiri-shichō ).

When Hokkaidō was reorganized on April 1, 2010, it was renamed Okhotsk sub-prefecture.

Reorganizations

  • On October 1, 2005, the cities of Ikutahara , Engaru , Maruseppu and the village of Shirataki from Mombetsu County merged to form the new city of Engaru.
  • On March 5, 2006, the city of Kitami, the cities of Tanno , Rubeshibe and Tokoro from the district of Tokoro merged to form the new city of Kitami.
  • On March 31, 2006, Memanbetsu City and Higashimokoto Village from Abashiri County merged to form the new city of Ōzora.

Infrastructure

The sub-prefecture has two airports: Mombetsu Airport in Mombetsu and Memanbetsu Airport in Ōzora, which emerged from Memanbetsu in 2006.
