Urbach is a district of Cologne in the east of the Porz district and is located on the B 8 between Eil and Wahn .

location

Geologically speaking, Urbach lies on a former branch of the Rhine . The district is bordered to the east with the Federal Highway 59 at Grengel . In the south, the border with Elsdorf runs along Friedrich-Hirsch-Strasse and Friedensstrasse. In the west Urbach borders on Porz and in the north on Eil .

history

The name probably comes from the word Urbich (Ahd. Old brook), which is underlined by the proximity to an old arm of the Rhine. Until the first half of the 20th century, individual wetlands were still recognizable (e.g. at Bungert). The construction of the first church around 1100 suggests the first permanent settlement before the 12th century.

The reason for the village was the intersection of the Deutz-Urbach-Altenrath-Bergisches Land and Heumar-Eil-Urbach-Wahn-Troisdorf-Siegburg highways. The former are only partially recognizable today, such as in Poll (Siegburger Straße), Ensen (Urbacher Weg), Porz (Deutzer Weg), Urbach (Kaiserstraße, Waldstraße) and the Wahner Heide (partly Alte Kölner Straße). At the crossing point, next to the inn with a dance hall, there was a magnolia tree, which was known far beyond the village for its blossoming. The parish church of St. Bartholomew and some larger courtyards (Kirchenhof, Leuschhof, Zehnthof and Maarhof) were laid out on the higher eastern bank area along today's Frankfurter Straße. On the flatter western bank along the Kupfergasse, the Sternenberger Hof and the Wiedenhof. The school was later built in connection with the latter farm. The area in between had a marketplace-like extension in the north at the intersection of the route to Cologne (today's Kaiserstraße) with the route to Wahn and the Bergisches Land, while the parish's orchard (Bungert) was located at the south end. Gradually the arm of the Rhine was also built up to these two open spaces. This Bungert is now a small green area with a playground, and at its southern end is the war memorial , initiated by the Urbach main teacher Johann Barz, who was prematurely retired in 1933 and erected by the Cologne architect Ludwig Paffendorf, who lives in Urbach, until 1934.

The Urbach church was also the parish center for the villages of Porz, Eil and Elsdorf.

Urbach had been part of the Porz office in the Duchy of Berg from the earliest times , so there was always close political ties to the surrounding villages. With the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Berg (1806) and the restructuring of the administration based on the French model (1808), Urbach came to the Rhine department . Since 1815 Urbach belonged to Prussia and was assigned to the mayor's office of Heumar . Increasing industrialization used the nearby Rhine as a traffic artery. A new industrial district of Porz-Urbach was created between the villages of Porz and Urbach, where a train station of the same name (today Porz (Rhine)) was built on the Cologne - Niederlahnstein line .

The two communities Heumar and Wahn were united in 1929 to form the large community of Porz am Rhein . This received city rights in 1951 and became part of the city of Cologne in 1975 through the incorporation or municipal reorganization . Today Urbach is a purely residential part of the city, which is still conveniently located and has grown structurally with its former neighboring villages to form an urban unit.

Good Maarhof

Gut Maarhof is a closed four-wing courtyard on Frankfurter Strasse in Porz-Urbach. The two-storey mansion has a stucco facade (1896), the former farm buildings are made of brick. The estate was first mentioned in 1623.

In 1982 the city of Cologne placed the Maarhof under monument protection. The topping-out ceremony for the restored courtyard took place in the summer of 1985. In addition to the main building, 23 apartments surround the historic residential complex.
