Urmond (pronunciation: Ürmont ; Limburg Uermend or Werment ) is a village within the Dutch municipality of Stein , which is located in the province of Limburg . The village has around 3,395 inhabitants. Part of the so-called old primeval moon (“ Oud-Urmond ”) was placed under monument protection as a protected village image (“ Rijksbeschermd dorpsgezicht ”) .

history

The place name Urmond first appears in documents from the 12th century as Overmunthe . At that time Munte was used to designate a reinforced hill or an escape hill. In any case, the name Urmond has nothing to do with the confluence of the Ur creek into the Meuse , in the twelfth century this confluence was much further west.

Urmond used to be part of the possessions of the Archbishop of Cologne . As a result of a series of wars, the country was initially lost and then again in the hands of the Archbishop of Cologne in 1153.

Together with a few other villages in the area, Urmond was part of the feudal office of Born . Over time, the area fell into Geldrian , Jülich and then French hands.

From the 13th century onwards, Urmond developed into a trading center as a result of shipping on the nearby Meuse . The numerous wars in the region have repeatedly negatively affected shipping on the Meuse and the associated trade over long periods of time. The Eighty Years' War in particular was a difficult time for boatmen on the Meuse .

In the course of time, not only wars, but also floods and low water levels repeatedly brought shipping to a standstill on the Meuse. This eventually led to the construction of the Julianakanal ( Dutch Julianakanaal ) and another canal, the Zuid-Willemsvaart . This and the construction of the railway eventually led to the closure and dismantling of the Maashafen.

In 1982 the municipality of Urmond (consisting of Urmond , Urmond-Oost , Berg aan de Maas and Nattenhoven ) merged with the municipalities of Elsloo and Stein to form today's (large) municipality of Stein .

As a Jülich castle freedom , Urmond was partially surrounded by walls and had some gates (guarded gates). The earliest mention of Urmond as a castle freedom dates from 1595. During the French occupation in 1800, the former castle freedom Urmond and the village of Berg aan de Maas were merged to form a municipality Urmond . This municipality of Urmond then continued to exist until the municipal reorganization in 1982.

Geographical location

Urmond lies between the Maas and the Dutch A2 and is cut by the Julianakanal. Beyond the A2 motorway is the extensive area of the Chemelot industrial complex , a large part of which is used by the Dutch chemical company Koninklijke DSM NV , and the small Heksenberg nature reserve . In north-south direction, Urmond is framed by the village centers of the neighboring towns of Berg aan de Maas and Stein .

economy

Many Urmond residents are employed in the nearby chemical complex DSM. The marketing center of this company is even in Urmond. Next to this marketing center is the large Van der Valk hotel , which is also a large local employer . There is also a small industrial park in the south of the village. In the north of the village there are a smaller number of farms . Here is a residential area planned ( " Bramert-Noord "). The area is right on the A2 with a view of the DSM site . However, the noise pollution in this residential area is so great that building there is only allowed with a special permit. The construction of this residential area also touches on a cultural landscape with the Belvedere area .

The aforementioned church from 1793 was also desecrated, is now the property of the Urmond Monument Foundation (“ Urmondse Monumentenstichting ”) and is used with great success as an exhibition building.

Furthermore, there are some worth seeing houses in Urmond, a stand mill from 1803 and the Schifferhaus (" schippershuis ") with a gable in the Renaissance style from the 16th century .

Urmond has a large number of monuments . The Urmond Monument Foundation also takes care of the Warft Church, the Marienkapelle , the Barbarakapelle and the Kreuzkapelle .

Events

Once a year, on the first weekend in June, the St. Leendert fair is held in the old village center . And on Ascension Day there is always the free open-air concert Ur Pop , which was originally held in Molenpark , in the middle of Urmond-Oost. Due to construction work in the park, the festival was temporarily moved to the banks of the Meuse, where it is now held every year because of its great success.
