Urs Michael Fiechtner (born November 2, 1955 in Bonn ) is a German writer and human rights activist .

family

Urs Michael Fiechtner comes from a Swabian family of officers and civil servants. He is the son of Colonel Dietrich Fiechtner (1913–1985), who was close to Augusto Pinochet as a German military attaché in Chile and Peru , and Ingeborg Fiechtner née Weiger. His grandfathers were the Ulm principal studies director Karl Weiger, one of the leading members of the paramilitary Swabian banner founded in 1920 as the successor organization of the Ulm Resident Defense , and Eduard Maximilian Fiechtner, government builder in Château-Salins ( Alsace-Lorraine , who fell in World War I as captain of the 2nd Bavarian foot artillery regiment) ). His great-grandfathers were Carl Weiger, honorary citizen of Oberkochen , and Eduard Fiechtner , honorary citizen of Untertürkheim .

Career

From 1961 to 1966 Fiechtner lived in Santiago de Chile , where he attended the German School. The family then moved to Cologne and later to Starnberg, owing to the father's military career . Urs M. Fiechtner has lived in Ulm and the region since 1973 . He left all secondary schools early without graduating from high school .

In 1963 his father chose him for his first political appearance as the mascot "El pequeño Cadete" (the little cadet) of the Chilean armed forces. The pictures of the eight-year-old saluting before the military parade or flanked by Federal President Heinrich Lübke and his wife went through the German press.

In 1970, when he founded a group of Amnesty International students in Starnberg at the age of 15, Urs M. Fiechtner had distanced himself from the political milieu of his family environment. He took part in student movements against right-wing teachers and school directors, for the integration of guest worker families or for the establishment of drug counseling in Starnberg and Munich . In 1973 he founded an Amnesty International group in Ulm. Since then he has been elected spokesman for the group over and over again. Since 1977 Urs M. Fiechtner has been working with the Argentine self-help organization Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo , the grandmothers of the children abducted during the military dictatorship, as well as the Madres Alemanas , the mothers of German and German-born people who disappeared . In 1981 he founded the Argentinahilfe e. V. in Ulm and in 1993 the initiative to set up the treatment center for torture victims Ulm (BFU), which was realized in 1995 . In 2009 Urs M. Fiechtner helped set up a support association for the BFU, and in 2014 he helped found the Ulm Foundation for Human Rights Education . In 2015 he founded Edition Kettenbruch , publications on human rights issues.

Literary work

In 1973 Urs M. Fiechtner published poetry for the first time in the Ulmer youth newspaper, which is close to the Jusos . He has been giving author readings since 1974 . Over the next 40 years, there will be around 2000 readings in German-speaking countries and Chile. In 1976 he founded the intercultural authors 'collective 79 , later the authors' group79 , whose central theme is human rights .

Together with the Chilean musician Sergio Vesely, who lives in exile in Germany , Fiechtner developed the form of concert reading in 1977 as a combination of literature and music. Their working partnership will last over the following decades.

Since the beginning he has worked with all literary genres , with the central form in Fiechtner's work being poetry. The focus of the lyrical work is the song for America , a poetic telling of the history of Latin America from Indian tradition through colonial history to the end of the colonial era. The cycle was published in three stages in 1986, 1991 and 2000.

His greatest commercial success is his first youth book in 1985, the documentary novel Anna's Story , which has been translated into Danish, Catalan, Galician and Spanish and was published in four hardcover and 16 paperback editions. In the publications that followed, the boundaries between the genres of youth and adult books became increasingly blurred. The focus of the literary work remains the subject of “human rights”.
