Vuur ( nl .: Fire ) is a Dutch progressive metal band.

history

In 2015, the former The Gathering singer Anneke van Giersbergen released an album of her project The Gentle Storm together with Arjen Lucassen ( Ayreon, among others ) . Van Giersbergen wanted to go on tour with the project, but had to put together a band because Lucassen doesn't want to tour. To the live band, the former belonged Gorefest - drummer Ed Warby , the guitarist Ferry Duijsens, Merel Bechtold and Ruud Jolie, the bassist (u. A. Johan van Stratum Stream of Passion ), keyboardist Jost van den Broek and singer Marcela Bovio (including Stream of Passion). During the tour, van Giersbergen decided to continue this project. However, the music should be heavier and more progressive than that of The Gentle Storm, while their solo albums should be more based on acoustic folk .

Originally the band was supposed to be called Fire . However, there have been several bands with this name. Ultimately, they decided on the Dutch word for fire. The band name can also be interpreted as a passion or drive . The Gentle Storm's live band includes Ed Warby, Ferry Duijsens, Johan van Stratum and Marcela Bovio Vuur. Jord Otto, who previously played at ReVamp , then joined as the second guitarist. Together with the music producer Joost van den Broek, the band recorded their debut album in February 2017. The musicians were supported in songwriting by van den Broek as well as Mark Holcombe ( Periphery ), Esa Holopainen ( Amorphis ) and Daniel Cardoso ( Anathema ). The recordings took place in the Sandlane Recording Facilities in Rijen . While the band was working on the album, Marcela left Bovia Vuur.

On June 9, 2017, Vuur played their first concert in Leeuwarden , before appearing in summer 2017 at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival , the Dynamo Metal Fest and the Masters of Rock . The release of the debut album In This Moment We Are Free - Cities took place on October 20, 2017 via the German record label InsideOut Music . Each of the eleven songs is related to cities that van Giersbergen has toured in the course of her life and that made a strong impression on her. The eleven cities include Berlin , Rotterdam , Beirut , San Francisco , Rio , London , Santiago , Mexico City , Helsinki , Istanbul and Paris . Furthermore, life would consist of opposites and people would increasingly position themselves in extremes. Music would connect people and let them become free.

The album debuted at number two on the Dutch album charts. In autumn 2017, a European tour followed together with Myrath as support act for Epica , before an own headliner tour with support act Votum followed in February 2018 . In summer 2018 the band played at the Metaldays , FortaRock Festival and Dynamo Metal Fest festivals. In This Moment We Are Free - Cities was nominated for Best Debut Album at the 2018 Metal Hammer Awards . However, the award went to the band Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons .

style

According to Anneke van Giersbergen, Vuur's music has the melancholy of The Gathering and many elements of The Gentle Storm. However, Vuur would sound a bit darker and have fewer folk elements. Vuur would be influenced by “ masculine acts” like Mastodon or Devin Townsend , with van Giersbergen wanting to “combine hardness with beauty”.
