Vandalia is a city and county seat of Fayette County in the US -amerikanischen State Illinois . In 2000 Vandalia had 6,975 inhabitants; by the official estimate in 2009, the population had decreased to 6,295.

Vandalia is located on the west bank of the Kaskaskia River at 38 ° 58'05 "north latitude and 89 ° 06'07" west longitude and extends over 14.66 km², which consists exclusively of land.
Interstate 70 runs along the northern edge of Vandalia and is the fastest connection from St. Louis to Indianapolis . US Highway 40 , US Highway 51 , Illinois State Route 185 and a number of secondary roads intersect in the center of the city .
A railway line also runs through the city center of Vandalia in a west-east direction.
The closest major cities are St. Louis, Missouri (117 km west-southwest), Illinois' capital city Springfield (122 km northwest), Decatur (106 km north) and Effingham (52.4 km northeast).
history
From 1819 to 1839 Vandalia was the state capital of Illinois. In late 1834, Abraham Lincoln , who later became the 16th President of the United States , began his career as a lawyer in Vandalia.
Demographic data
In the official census in 2000 , the population was 6,975. These were distributed over 2,344 households in 1,425 families. The population density was 475.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 2,544 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 173.5 buildings per square kilometer.
The population in 2000 was 83.6 percent white , 15.0 percent African American , 0.1 percent Native American , 0.3 percent Asian, and 0.5 percent other. 0.5 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 1.7 percent of the population were Hispanics who belonged to any of the above groups.
18.3 percent were under 18 years of age, 12.4 percent between 18 and 24, 34.3 percent between 25 and 44, 17.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.1 percent 65 and over. The mean age was 36 years. Statistically, there were 134.4 men for every 100 women, 144.4 for those over 18 years of age.
The median income per household was 30,857 US dollars (USD), the median family income 39,762 USD. The median income for men was $ 27,342 and that for women was $ 19,109. The per capita income was $ 14,918. Around 8.9 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
