Varujan Vosganian (born July 25, 1958 in Craiova ) is a Romanian economist , politician , essayist and poet of Armenian descent.

Life

Varujan Vosganian's Armenian ancestors were among the survivors of the Ottoman genocide against the Armenians . He attended school in Focșani and studied economics at the Bucharest University of Economics until 1982 and mathematics at the University of Bucharest until 1991 , where he received his doctorate in economics in 1998.

Vosganian was a member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies from 1990 to 1992 and from 1992 to 1996 , and from 1996 to 2000 and since 2004 a member of the Romanian Senate . Vosganian represents neoliberal positions.

From 1996 to 2003 he led the neoliberal party “Uniunea Forţelor de Dreapta”, which then united with the right-wing liberal Partidul Național Liberal . In 2006 he withdrew his candidacy as Romanian representative in the European Commission on the grounds that the allegations that he had an inadequate European profile, that he was too closely associated with multinational companies or that he was a Securitate spy were unfounded, but he does not want to damage the Romanian state by potentially taking a long time to examine his candidacy. Vosganian was Minister of Economy in the Tăriceanu government from 2007 to 2008 . At the end of 2012, he was reappointed to the Ponta Cabinet as Minister for Trade and Industry .

Vosganian has published various books on economic and political subjects and he also writes poetry and novels. He is a member of the Uniunea Scriitorilor din România , of which he has been Vice President since 2005. He is President of the Association of Armenians in Romania. His novel Cartea şoaptelor, which was published in 2009 and tells the genocide of the Armenians from the perspective of a family chronicle , was also published in 2013 in a German translation under the title Book of Whispers . On October 15, 2016, he and his translator received the renowned Polish Central European Literature Prize Angelus in Wroclaw .
