The Veerse is a small river in Lower Saxony . The headwaters are in the Pietzmoor , south of Schneverdingen . It flows on past the places Lünzen and Veerse, through the Veerseniederung nature reserve and flows into the Wümme between Rotenburg and Scheeßel near Veersebrück . At Westervesede, the Lünzener Bruchbach flows into the Veerse as the largest tributary.

On the first section of its course, the Veerse, due to its proximity to the town of Schneverdingen, only has water quality class II – III: critically contaminated (beta to alphamesosaprob). From Lünzen onwards, the water quality improves to class II: moderately polluted (betamesosaprob). Thanks to the good water quality and a resettlement project by the Westervesede fishing club, the Veerse has been a spawning area for sea trout again for several years .

The Veerse is one of the most valuable rivers in terms of nature conservation and fish-fauna in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) and (in the upper reaches) of the district of Heidekreis. With river lamprey , brook lamprey , Mühlkoppe , salmon , minnow , loach , brook loach , sea trout , brook trout and eel burbot , a regionally unique high number of threatened and protected species of fish and lampreys lives here. The otter has also returned to the Veerse a few years ago.

In April 2012, an accident occurred in Schultenwede, in which 400 m³ of digestate from a biogas plant ran into the Lünzener Bruchbach. The fish population of the Bruchbach was completely destroyed over a length of 9 km. The Veerse, into which the Bruchbach flows, was also affected by rescue measures initiated late, which ruined the renaturation work of many years.

In the district of Rotenburg (W.), the entire course of the stream and large parts of the floodplain are part of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) area 38 - Wümmeniederung. With funds from the otter protection program, numerous areas in the floodplain were bought by the state of Lower Saxony and taken out of agricultural use.
