The Vesdre at Limbourg |
The Weser (also Weserbach ; French Vesdre ; wallon. Vesse ; ndl. Vesder ) is an almost 70 km long tributary of the Ourthe in Belgium . In the first half it runs in the German-speaking part of Belgium, then in the French-speaking area. Two kilometers of the upper reaches are in Germany .
geography
The Weser rises in Belgium in the High Fens in the Schennekul just one kilometer west of the German-Belgian border near Konzen . First, the still small body of water flows north to Roetgen , there in the village for two kilometers through Germany. Before that, a 2500 m long canal branches off, which leads most of the water past Roetgen and through the Steinbach back to the Weser. This diversion through Belgian forest area was created between 1960 and 1962 to prevent the inflow of contaminated canal and surface water from the area around Roetgen in order to ensure the highest possible bacteriological purity of the inflow into the Weser dam near Eupen . At the same time, the surface and service water that collects in the Roetgen and Konzen area is fed to the Grölisbach through a tunnel opposite Charliers-Mühle Roetgen . In the meantime, for reasons of wildlife protection, consideration is being given to backfilling the canal. The Weser Reservoir, built between 1938 and 1950, is the most important drinking water reservoir in Belgium.
To the west of Eupen, the river reaches the French-speaking area. Here, fish ladders were laid out on various small tributaries to enable the trout, which are now more and more common in the upper Weser area, to climb into their spawning areas. The Vesdre then flows through Limbourg , whose fortress gave its name to the Belgian and Dutch provinces of Limburg , through Verviers , the largest city on the Vesdre, and through Pepinster and Chaudfontaine .
The most important tributaries also come from the High Fens and flow from the left: the Getzbach , the Hill (French: Helle) in Eupen, the Gileppe just before Limburg and the Hoëgne with its source stream Poleur 33 km long in Pepinster. In the urban area of Liège , the Vesdre flows into the Ourthe with an average water flow of around 11 m³ / s , just two and a half kilometers before it flows into the Meuse .
history
From the beginning of the 17th century, the acidic and lime-poor water of the river was a source of the flourishing textile industry , which helped the entire valley to become extremely prosperous until the middle of the 20th century.
Because of its bacteriological purity, the water from the High Fens is primarily used to supply drinking water in modern times. Originally, the dams were designed to regulate industrial water.
