action

The couple Beate and Henning Müller run a joint veterinary practice. The couple's son, Martin Müller, also studied veterinary medicine and, after a failed attempt as a veterinarian, turned to research by taking up a post-doctoral degree. His foulness leads to the fact that he misses the deadline for the extension of this degree and thereby also loses his job at the university. In a conversation with his girlfriend Tessa Vogt, he dismissed the situation indifferently, so that Tessa said it couldn't go on like this and asked Martin to take a break with spatial separation.

Once again, Martin doesn't know what to do next and is in his own way, but when she calls his mother he doesn't admit what happened, although she already knows everything about Tessa. Beate therefore decides to use a white lie to convince Martin to return to his parents' house. She asks her husband, who has suffered a slight bruise on his arm, to pretend his arm is broken so that Martin's help is urgently needed. Her plan works, Martin goes home with mixed feelings and accompanies his father on his visits to the farms of the farmers. When diagnosing whether a cow is pregnant, he is uncertain, which irritates the farmer. With another cow, he makes a diagnosis that his father does not think possible. Henning Müller still tries to support his son, although Martin's behavior makes it increasingly difficult for him. There is a quarrel between father and son, whereupon Martin wants to flee again. However, his mother can persuade him to wait for the weekend first. When Melanie Harmsen visits the Müller's, it is also an idea from Martin's dominant mother, who thinks that Melanie, who studies veterinary medicine, would be a good match for her son, at least better than Tessa.

When father and son are traveling together because Martin's diagnosis was probably not that wrong after all, he confesses to his father the truth about his lost job and his separation from Tessa. To tell Martin the truth about his not broken arm, however, fails because of his wife's veto.

When Tessa comes by in Martin's absence and only meets his mother on site, Beate claims that her son no longer wants to talk to her and told her that it would be better if he completely forgot about Tessa. Irritated and disappointed, Tessa leaves the matter, but first gives her an envelope intended for Martin. Beate neither tells her son about Tessa's visit, nor does she give him the envelope.

Martin has now discovered by chance that his father has no broken arm and can work and wants to leave his parents' home again. However, his father wants to continue playing the game for reasons Martin cannot understand. When Martin meets his old teacher Jürgen Ackermann, he unexpectedly gives him courage and says that he should believe in himself, that he is talented and has a research gene, that is a gift. Shortly afterwards Martin finds out through a phone call with Tessa that she was there the day before. With suppressed anger in his voice, he asks his mother for the envelope and turns to go. Before that, he says that maybe he is not what his parents wanted him to be, that is okay, but that it is his life and from now on they no longer have to interfere. When he opens the envelope a little later, he finds a positive pregnancy test in it. Knowing that we will soon have a child releases unexpected strength in Martin.

Beate apologizes to Tessa for her behavior. She is determined to do reconstruction work in Africa for a certain period of time, which has always been a need of her. The fact that her husband had an affair with the farmer Annika Kruse makes this decision all the easier. On his way to Kiel with Tessa, where both of them are looking for a job, Martin drives by his father and lets him know that he will soon be a grandpa.

criticism

Cinema couldn't get much out of the film and wrote: “As unoriginal as the title, so uninspired the whole story: It's bumpy like on the cow pasture, the humor is flat. If you want to find something good: the actors come across as personable. But that's it. ”Conclusion: Family dramedy:“ A lot of crap in the cowshed. ”

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv gave the film four out of six possible stars and stated: “Barbara Philipp, Matthias Brenner and Oliver Konietzny show that it doesn't take big names to tell a small, likeable story that is surprising and dramatic and takes psychologically coherent turns and where a happy ending is mandatory. What I particularly like about this solidly staged film is the way it reflects the helper syndrome so popular in entertainment films and brushes it against the grain. ”Tittelbach wrote about the performance of Barbara Philipp, an actress with her“ class ”,“ in small gestures and her wonderful eye play ” , something "of their inner tension". Matthias Brenner and Oliver Konietzny are also "in no way inferior to their better-known colleagues". All three figures are "equal" and are "equally psychologically sounded out". The strategy of Degeto is also behind the “nonsensical film title”: “The regular Friday audience should be picked up with a rural family scenario that is irrelevant from the outside, while the how the narrative (concentration on the family triangle, psychological subtexts) looks for more Aspiration aims and thus probably hopes to score points with a more demanding audience. It also goes well with the story that one does not rely on well-known names. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff dealt with the film for evangelisch.de and said that “the comedy is more than just a nice pastime”, the film “owes in no small measure to the good leading actors. Brenner and Philipp, both best known for their 'Tatort' roles [...] ”are“ worth seeing anyway ”. This also applies "to Oliver Konietzny, who already made a very positive impression in the NDR debut 'Suddenly Turk' (2016)". “Sarah Hannemann, a noticeable figure just because of her wild, red curls, radiates a great presence; her first leading role ”is“ more than overdue ”. As a guest, “Volker Lechtenbrink can also be seen as Martin's old bio teacher, who finally [helps] the young man to find his own way”.
