Vincenzo Balzani (* 15. November 1936 in Forlimpopoli , Emilia-Romagna ) is an Italian chemist and emeritus professors of the University of Bologna . As of 2011, he had written or co-authored more than 550 publications in scientific journals . In 2015, he was one of the 100 most cited chemists in the world and had an h-index of 101, which together with Fabrizio Palla made him number 35 among the leading Italian scientists. As of November 2019, Google Scholar gives an h-index of 119, the Scopus database of 103.

academic career

Balzani studied chemistry at the University of Bologna and received his doctorate cum laude in 1960 . After several years as an assistant or associate professor at the universities of Bologna and Ferrara , he became a full professor in Bologna in 1973 . In 2010 he retired there . He was also visiting professor at various universities, a. a. the University of British Columbia , the University of Strasbourg and the University of Bordeaux .

His main research interests include a. the photochemistry that Photophysik and supramolecular chemistry . In addition, Balzani worked on electron transfer reactions, molecular nanotechnology and photochemical solar energy conversion .

In addition, he was head of various institutes and research facilities. Among other things, he was from 1977 to 1988 the director of the Institute for Photochemistry and Radiation Chemistry (FRAE) in Bologna and from 1981 to 1998 head of the center for photochemical conversion of solar energy in Bologna. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the Royal Society of Chemistry , a member of the Academia Europaea and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, among others .

He was also active on the editorial board of various specialist journals, including Chemistry - A European Journal , ChemPhysChem , Small and ChemSusChem .

Awards

Balzani has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements. A list can be found here. Among other things, he received the Accademia dei Lincei Award in 1992 and the Blaise Pascal Medal in 2009 . He has also had an honorary doctorate from the University of Friborg in Switzerland since 1989 . In 2013 he received the Nature Award for mentoring in science for his life's work from the journal Nature . In 2017 he was awarded the Grand Prix 2016 de la Fondation de la Maison de la Chimie in Paris . In 2019 he received the Primo Levi Prize from the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker and Società Chimica Italiana .
