history

The family of the Lords of Bodman , Reichsministeriale der Hohenstaufen and the Bishop of Konstanz , had their ancestral seat at Hohenbodman Castle , around which the Hohenbodman rule developed. The place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1325. Later, the Lords of Bodman sold the castle and village to the free imperial city of Überlingen after they had been enfeoffed with the Palatinate in Bodman and their ancestral home had served as a second residence. The free imperial city of Überlingen had the castle renewed. Since Überlingen was very wealthy and powerful at that time, they enlarged their property and secured it with smaller castles.

In 1642, during the Thirty Years' War , the castle was burned down to the tower by the troops of Konrad Widerholt . A new building does not take place and the bailiff moved his official seat to the village.

Hohenbodman was an independent municipality in the Überlingen district . As part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg , the community was incorporated into Owingen on January 1, 1972. When the Überlingen district was dissolved in the course of the district reform on January 1, 1973 , Owingen and thus Hohenbodman came to the Lake Constance district.
