The Hohenbodman ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 658 meters above sea level above the Linzer Aach north of Überlingen in the Hohenbodman district of the municipality of Owingen in the Lake Constance district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The castle was built at the end of the 11th century by the Lords of Bodman , mentioned in the 13th century, and was later a pawn by the Constance Monastery . The castle was renovated between 1479 and 1481 and in 1507 became the property of the Vogt of the imperial city of Überlingen. During the Thirty Years War it was captured by Konrad Widerholt and burned down in 1642 . Only the tower escaped destruction.

The 37 meter high keep of the former castle remained in the possession of the city of Überlingen until 1971 , before it was handed over to the community of Owingen for a symbolic 661 German marks. The tower, which has a circumference of 28 meters on the outside and a diameter of over 2.5 meters on the inside, was subjected to extensive and cost-intensive security and renovation work by the municipality in 1976 and between 1996 and 1999. A brick roofing was also subsequently attached to the listed tower, which, however, had to be renewed after a few years and was replaced by a copper roofing with funds from the 2011 Monument Funding Program of the State of Baden-Württemberg.

Today the observation tower serves the community as a landmark and figurehead as well as a defining landmark . It offers a panoramic view of the Salem Valley , Lake Constance and, when the visibility is good, a wonderful Alpine panorama .
