Markdorf Castle

The castle Markdorf , even Altschloss called, is a Outbound Höhenburg over a three-sided steep valley about 1000 meters northwest of the parish church of St. Nicholas in Markdorf in Bodenseekreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

The castle was probably built in the middle of the 11th century by the noble lords of Markdorf and mentioned in 1079 as "castellum nomine Marchtorf". In the same year the castle was destroyed in the course of the investiture dispute . In the 16th century the castle fell into disrepair.

The neck moat and small remains of the curtain wall are still preserved from the former castle complex on a rectangular castle hill plateau measuring 42 by 20 meters .
