Fürstenhäusle in Meersburg, 2005

The Fürstenhäusle is a historical building and museum in memory of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in Meersburg . It is located a few steps from the Meersburger Obertor above in a vineyard .

Garden house of the prince-bishop

The name Fürstenhäusle refers to the Konstanz canon and later Prince-Bishop Jakob Fugger von Kirchberg and Weißenhorn , who had the building erected as a garden house or as a vineyard house around 1600. It remained in the possession of the prince-bishops, most recently Maximilian Christoph von Rodt, for 200 years . In the course of secularization , it went to the House of Baden in 1803 .

Auctioned at Droste-Hülshoff

After the house had been empty for a few decades, it was auctioned off to Annette von Droste-Hülshoff by the Meersburg priest house administration in November 1843 . All dignitaries had come to the auction, but decided not to bid when Droste-Hülshoff said, when asked, that she might be able to bid. After a few minutes of bidding, she was awarded the bid for 400 thalers. She wrote about it: “Everyone says I would have bought ridiculously cheap, the vines alone cost just as much here in a poorer location, and at least twice as much in a good one, and I would have the house completely for free. In any case, I'll get the money for the first edition of my poems. I really enjoy this purchase ”. She called the study with a view of Lake Constance "Swallow's Nest". In a letter to Elise Rüdiger , née Hohenhausen from 1843, she writes:

“Now I have to tell you that I've been a terrific landowner for eight days. I bought the bare prince's house, which lies next to the road to peace, in an increase along with the vineyard that goes with it, and for what? For 400 Reichsthaler! The view is almost too beautiful, that is, too lively for me when it comes to the near and too unrestricted when it comes to the distance. "

- Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in a letter to her friend Elise Rüdiger.

Inheritance within the family

The poet could hardly enjoy her property, which she had only acquired five years before her death, for health reasons. Her sister Jenny Freifrau von Laßberg took care of the administration of the small property , from whom she also received reports on the annual wine harvest. After her death in 1848, the Fürstenhäusle was inherited by her sister and her daughters, who lived at Meersburg Castle . In 1915 it was bought by a nephew of the poet, Carl Caspar von Droste zu Hülshoff , who expanded the Fürstenhäusle, established it as a family property and lived there until his death in 1922.

Facility as a museum

Carl Caspar von Droste zu Hülshoff's widow Marie, b. von Bothmer , founded the museum in 1924. Before that, her husband had significantly expanded the Fürstenhäusle by adding a rear extension. The museum is located in the unchanged front section.

After damage in the Second World War, the wife of Heinrich von Bothmer - a grandson of Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff - refurbished it with the help of loans from relatives. It was Helene von Bothmer , b. Davis (1908–1996), a native of the United States, who in 1955 donated the Droste Prize of the city of Meersburg , the oldest German-language literary prize.

Museum of the State of Baden-Württemberg

Helene von Bothmer sold the museum and its inventory to the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1962 , but lived and worked there until 1977 as a curator , supported by her new husband Karl Graf von Bothmer from 1953 to 1971 . In 1972 Wilderich von Droste zu Hülshoff lived with her . She was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit in 1978 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 1988 . Since it is one of the state's own monuments, the Fürstenhäusle is looked after by the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg .

The house houses a museum that commemorates the life and work of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Among the exhibited furniture, for example, is the Biedermeier - secretary , emerged in which many of the literary creations of the poet. Numerous portraits on the walls show the former resident, her family and people who were important to her. Original manuscripts, illustrations for her poems, first and early editions are among the treasures of the museum. It also contains personal items from Droste-Hülshoff such as jewelry, porcelain and pieces from the mineral collection. Over 10,000 visitors are counted every year.

Others

It is noteworthy that before the family of the poet had only had a very unpleasant relationship with the family of the builder of the Fürstenhäusle, Count Fugger : the great-great-grandfather of the poet, Heinrich-Wilhelm I von Droste zu Hülshoff (1704– 1754), had on his cavalier tour in Salzburg a . a. invited a Count Fugger to his farewell dinner, but “forgot” to drink to him according to his custom. Count Fugger, who came from a very wealthy, but - in contrast to the Droste zu Hülshoff - not very aristocratic family, took it so badly that when he happened to meet him again in St. Peter's Square in Rome, he immediately went to a duel demanded. In self-defense , Droste zu Hülshoff stabbed him in this place, who afterwards could no longer be happy with his life.
