Hohenfels Castle

The Hohenfels ruins , also known as Alt-Hohenfels , are the ruins of a spur castle above the municipality of Sipplingen in the Lake Constance district in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The castle is located on a spur hill at 598  m above sea level. NN below the Haldenhof, the farmyard for Hohenfels Castle, first mentioned in 1441, northwest of Sipplingen.

history

Alt-Hohenfels was built around 1150 to 1190 by the Lords of Hohenfels, who were probably ministerials to the bishops of Constance . They exercised lower jurisdiction over Sipplingen. In 1191 the first written mention of a Constance canon Burkhard von Hohenfels took place . The “Burkhartslinde”, which is several hundred years old and registered as a natural monument, and the minnesinger's room at the Höhengasthof Haldenhof are named after the minstrel Burkart von Hohenfels. In 1292 the family divided and one line settled in a new castle called Neu-Hohenfels . After the remaining family died out, power came to his brother-in-law Wolf von Jungingen, whose family also died out. The Lords of Landenberg followed in 1437. In 1479 the Überlingen hospital acquired the castle and the manor, consisting of a few villages and above all the Sipplinger vineyards. After 1641 the castle fell into disrepair.

description

From the former castle complex, which had a residential tower at the highest point on an area of 9.90 by 13.50 meters, some remains of the walls of buildings and the circular wall have been preserved. The remains of the castle were partly cleared of trees and bushes in spring 2009 and now offer a good overview of the remaining castle complex.
