The 17th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 17th led over 148.2 kilometers from Zamora to Valladolid in Spain . There were two sprint ratings on the program.

It was the second flat stage in a row and was predestined for the sprinters. After twelve kilometers, another duo pulled away from the field: José Ruiz and Pedro Horrillo . They were able to gain a lead of over seven minutes and won both intermediate sprints. The stage took the expected course, but a wind edge created tension 18 kilometers from the finish. The top sprinters Tom Boonen and Erik Zabel threatened to lose touch, but their group was able to work its way up again. But a defect robbed Zabel of all of his chances. At the finish there was a mass sprint in which Wouter Weylandt benefited from the exhaustion of his captain Boonen and was able to secure victory from Matti Breschel . With the help of the intermediate sprints and his sixth place, Greg van Avermaet regained the points jersey.
