The 6th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 4th led over 150.1 kilometers from Ciudad Real to Toledo . There were two sprint classifications and a third category mountain classification to be completed.

There was an early attack on this stage. Four drivers tried their luck after just four kilometers, but were unable to break away from the field. This finally succeeded the trio Iban Mayoz , Volodymyr Djudja and Michail Ignatjew . But they were never able to pull out more than three and a half minutes, as the Équipe Cofidis organized the pursuit around second overall Sylvain Chavanel . Meanwhile, the field had broken in two, causing a sharp increase in speed. At the end of the ascent to the only mountain classification of the day, the outliers were caught by the first new outliers. Up to the intermediate sprints, the outliers were caught by the first field. Chavanel, who was only two seconds behind Levi Leipheimer in the overall standings before the stage , secured first place in both of them and thus a total of twelve bonus seconds. This enabled him to take over the overall management. The attacks in the following course were unsuccessful, so a sprint came out of the first field. Paolo Bettini won this before Philippe Gilbert and Alejandro Valverde . Due to the turmoil of the field, there were slight time losses even among the favorites.
