The 13th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 13th led over 209.5 kilometers from San Vicente de la B. to the Alto de L'Angiru . The program included two sprint ratings and one mountain rating each in the 3rd and Especial category as well as three mountain ratings in the 1st category.

After the second day of rest, today's king's stage, with the goal of the very steep Alto de L´Angiru and its up to 23.6 percent gradient, had to cope with a total of 3708 meters in altitude. Despite the difficulties ahead, the first two hours of racing were driven very quickly. In the first an hourly average of more than 45 kilometers and in the second of more than 43 kilometers. As on the previous two stages, a trio was able to pull away: Christophe Kern , Maarten Tjallingii and Matej Jurčo . Kern had attacked in the first mountain classification and the other two followed him. In the meantime the three had a lead of ten minutes and reached the next three mountain classifications in the 1st category in front of the field. In each case, Kern secured the maximum number of points and thus finished second in the mountain classification after the end of the stage. But David Moncoutié , who continues to be the leader in this classification , was able to collect 26 points over the course of the day. The favorites exchanged blows for the tour victory on the last climb of the day. In the second part of the mountain, only four riders were left at the top: Alberto Contador , Alejandro Valverde , Joaquim Rodríguez and Levi Leipheimer . Valverde attacked, Contador and Rodríguez followed and Leipheimer fell back. A preliminary decision for the overall standings had actually already been made. Leipheimer should not be able to make up for today's deficit. Contador attacked three and a half kilometers from the finish and was able to distance his opponents. He won the stage before Valverde. He also took over the gold jersey from Leipheimer and Carlos Sastre , who was fifth of the day. For a big co-favorite, the Vuelta was over on the descent of the penultimate mountain: Igor Antón fell and broke his collarbone.
