The 16th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 16th led over 186.3 kilometers from Ponferrada to Zamora . There were two sprint classifications and a 1st category mountain classification on the program.
Except for the ascent of the 1st category, this stage was to be classified as a flat stage. Since this had to be ridden at the beginning of the stage, the field went over the mountain as a whole and there was an exchange of blows in the fight for the mountain classification . David Moncoutié fended off all attacks and won the only mountain classification of the day. On the descent, a duo pulled away from the field: Jesus Rosendo and Walter Pedraza . They were able to break away from the field for a maximum of 8:40 minutes and win both intermediate sprints. But the sprinter teams took care of the follow-up work, so that the escape was hopeless. So the expected mass sprint came about, which Tom Boonen , ahead of Filippo Pozzato , was able to win.
