The 5th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 3rd was a 42.5-kilometer individual time trial from Ciudad Real to Ciudad Real (ITT).

Manuel Quinziato , who started 40th , was the first to set a good target time, which should have passed up to the time trial specialists. He was even able to defend his lead at the two interim measurement points until all drivers passed these points. Quinziato's time at the finish line lasted until it was Levi Leipheimer's turn. This had started cautiously, but in the end he had a lead on Quinziato of over half a minute. None of the other favorites for overall victory could endanger Leipheimer. Only the French time trial champion Sylvain Chavanel came close to the American. In the end he was twelve seconds short. The German hopes for a win of the day had rested on Sebastian Lang , Stefan Schumacher and Andreas Klöden . The latter, however, could not place in the top ten and ended up in eleventh and twelfth places. In contrast, Lang managed to do this narrowly as tenth.
