The 4th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 2nd led over 170.3 kilometers from Córdoba to Puertollano . Two sprint classifications and two mountain classifications in the 3rd category had to be completed.

In terms of characteristics, this stage was divided into two parts: At the beginning, the two mountain ratings and then a flat ride to the destination. So a fight for the mountain points began. This was secured by the wearer of the orange jersey Jesús Rosendo and thus extended his lead. In the descent came the attack of his teammate José Antonio López , who was able to pull away successfully. He had a maximum lead of almost eight minutes in his escape. On this he won both intermediate sprints and the second mountain classification of the day. In the first intermediate sprint, Daniele Bennati was able to secure another four bonus seconds and extend his lead in the overall standings. The peloton was the outlier with seven kilometers to go. The co-favorite for overall victory Damiano Cunego fell and was 2:16 minutes behind the other favorites at the finish. In the mass sprint, Daniele Bennati finally won ahead of Tom Boonen and secured another 20 bonus seconds and 25 points in the fight for the red jersey, which he also took over.

Ricardo Serrano , who had fallen the day before, had not started the 4th stage after a broken collarbone.
