The 14th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 14th led over 158.4 kilometers from Oviedo to EE Fuentes de Invierno . Two sprint classifications and three mountain classifications each in the 3rd and 1st category were on the program.

After the very difficult mountain arrival the day before, this stage wasn't easier either. Closed the field crossed the first mountain classification, which David Moncoutié , as the leader in this classification, secured. In the descent, a sextet pulled away from the field, after the second mountain classification a quintet caught up, so that a group of eleven drove in the lead: Damiano Cunego , Sylvain Chavanel , Martin Velits , Xavier Florencio , Wassil Kiryjenka , Iban Mayoz , Jurgen van Goolen , David Arroyo , David García , Dmitri Kosontschuk and Iñigo Landaluze . But since van Goolen was only twelve minutes behind in the overall standings, the peloton never gave the outliers more than four minutes ahead. Overall, the top group won five out of seven interim results. In the mountain classifications, Chavanel was in the lead to protect his teammate Moncoutie in this class. In the last climb of the day, the pace in the field was increased as expected and the last runaway van Goolen was caught six kilometers from the finish. Of the mountain specialists, Ezequiel Mosquera attacked successfully and was able to pull away with Alberto Contador and Levi Leipheimer . Carlos Sastre , who was third in the overall standings , was unable to follow. Shortly before the mountain classification, Contador attacked and was able to pull out a small lead, which he defended on the flat 700 meters to the finish and won the stage before Leipheimer. Sastre was 20 seconds behind, Alejandro Valverde lost another minute.
