The 19th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 19th led over 145.5 kilometers from Las Rozas to Segovia . Two sprint classifications and two mountain classifications in the 1st category were on the program.

Although the stage was quite short at 145 kilometers, the two mountain ratings also made it very difficult. At the beginning of the stage, no rider was able to clear the field. Only at the beginning of the first mountain classification did one group manage to break away. At the top of the standings, 14 riders came together: David Arroyo , Alberto Losada , Luis Pasamontes , Joaquim Rodríguez , Rubén Pérez , Iván Velasco , Iban Mayoz , Javier Moreno , Wassil Kiryjenka , Wolodymyr Hustow , Julien Loubet , Rémy Di Gregorio , Christophe Kern and Valerio Agnoli . The winner of the mountain classification was Kern, second in the mountain classification. The outliers could never really break away from the field, and so after the favorites had started before the summit of the second mountain classification, a merger came about. On the descent Loubet attacked and took off with Kiryjenka and Arroyo. Since the pace of Caisse d'Epargne was made in the field , Arroyo stayed out of the lead. At the end of the stage, Segovia had to complete two laps of ten kilometers each. Alejandro Valverde was the favorite for the stage win on a 1.7-kilometer-long finish climb and the associated time credit , which is why his team was determined to bring him to the top. But the outliers stayed in the front. 30 kilometers from the finish, Greg Van Avermaet , who wore the blue jersey, caught up in a group to the first field. After the first destination passage Loubet could no longer follow the pace of his two companions and fell behind. Caisse d'Epargne did not manage to catch up with the top duo. Here Kiryenka had no chance against the final spurt Arroyos, who was able to rest in the slipstream the whole time. Valverde finally finished fourth. Avermaet was able to secure twelve important points in the battle for the points classification one place behind.
