The 12th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 11th led over 186.4 kilometers from Burgos to Suances . There were two sprint classifications and one mountain classification in the 3rd category and two in the 2nd category on the program.
With the starting shot, the first attacks from the main field began and after eight kilometers a trio broke up like the day before: Sébastien Hinault , Sandy Casar and Manuel Quinziato . They quickly gained a four-minute lead, which remained constant for the rest of the escape. The three outliers secured the first four interim scores of the day. In the third mountain classification, David Moncoutié was able to extend his lead in the mountain classification by a further three points, as his competitors did not collect any points all day. At 142 km the stage became unexpectedly exciting when fellow favorite Alejandro Valverde fell back from the main field and had problems reconnecting with a lack of team support. At the front of the field, the Astana and Euskaltel-Euskadi teams were putting pressure on them. At first, the group around Valverde was able to keep the gap at around a minute, but gradually the gap widened. In the end, he was a little more than 3:20 minutes behind. The peloton had meanwhile shrunk further and consisted of only 50 riders 30 kilometers from the finish. The outliers were made before the second intermediate sprint. On the upward stretch of the finish line, it was mainly the favorites in the overall standings and good one-day racers who made the decision among themselves. The stage won in the end the Italian Paolo Bettini won ahead of his compatriot Davide Rebellin .
