The 11th stage of the Vuelta a España 2008 on September 10th led over 178 kilometers from Calahorra to Burgos . There were two sprint classifications and a third category mountain classification on the program.
On this stage, too, it took a while before a breakaway group could form. Finally, a trio pulled away: José Antonio López , Serafín Martínez and Andrij Hrywko . These three won the three intermediate rankings on the way, so that there could be no changes in the intermediate rankings. Only the leader in the mountain classification, David Moncoutié , was able to extend his lead by one point with fourth and last place in the only mountain classification. The maximum lead of the runaways was around seven minutes, but that was not enough to successfully complete the escape. So in the end there was another mass sprint which Óscar Freire won ahead of Tom Boonen .
