The WIN Charter ( spelling WIN! Charter ) of the state of Baden-Württemberg is so far the only sustainability management system in Germany specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It represents a voluntary commitment to sustainability . Among other things, the WIN Charter aims to contribute to spreading and anchoring the idea of sustainability in all branches of the Baden-Württemberg economy. By signing the WIN Charter, the companies are making a clear commitment to their economic, ecological and social responsibility. The WIN charter is characterized by its good feasibility, high transparency and the special approach of increasing sustainability on site.

history

The WIN charter is based on suggestions from the initiative group of the economic initiative sustainability of the sustainability strategy of the state of Baden-Württemberg. It was launched in May 2014 as part of a ceremony with 38 signing companies. Since May 2016, the further development of the WIN Charter has been anchored in the coalition agreement between Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Baden-Württemberg and the CDU Baden-Württemberg of the Kretschmann II cabinet .

The twelve guiding principles

The WIN Charter consists of twelve guiding principles, the content of which covers the aspects of sustainability (economy, ecology and social issues). These form the common basic values and are intended to provide points of reference for the implementation of the charter in a regional and local context.

The twelve guiding principles at a glance:

Principle 1 - Human and Employee Rights
"We respect and protect human and employee rights, secure and promote equal opportunities and prevent all forms of discrimination and exploitation in all of our corporate processes."
Principle 2 - employee wellbeing
"We respect, protect and promote the well-being and interests of our employees."
Principle 3 - Stakeholder Groups
"We consider and consider all stakeholder groups and their interests in processes."
Principle 4 - Resources
"We are increasing resource efficiency, increasing raw material productivity and reducing the use of natural resources."
Principle 5 - Energy and Emissions
"We use renewable energies, increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with targets or offset them in a climate-neutral manner."
Principle 6 - Product stewardship
"We take responsibility for our services and products by examining the value creation process and the product cycle for sustainability and creating transparency in this regard."
Principle 7 - Business success and jobs
" We ensure long-term corporate success and offer jobs in the region. "
Principle 8 - Sustainable Innovation
"We promote innovations for products and services that increase sustainability and underline the innovation potential of the Baden-Württemberg economy."
Principle 9 - Financial Decisions
"We act in the spirit of sustainability, especially in the context of financial decisions."
Principle 10 - Anti-Corruption
"We prevent corruption, expose it and sanction it."
Principle 11 - Regional added value
"We generate added value for the region in which we do business. "
Principle 12 - Incentives to rethink
"We set incentives to rethink and act at all company levels and involve both our employees and all other stakeholders in a constant process to increase corporate sustainability."

WIN charter process

By signing the WIN Charter, companies publicly commit to the values formulated in the guiding principles and to individual goals derived from the guiding principles. Within three months of being signed, the companies must present a target concept in which they set out their goals and intended measures to increase sustainability in their company. The companies implement the measures outlined in their respective target concept and document the results using at least qualitative and, if possible, quantitative indicators. As part of the WIN process, a local WIN project is to be supported, thereby promoting sustainability in the company's immediate vicinity.

Review by stakeholders and the public

A special feature of the WIN charter is the auditing of sustainability reporting by the public. There is no need for a time-consuming and costly test procedure by a certification body or the like. Instead, the reports have to be published online and are therefore available to the stakeholders at any time. This promotes a direct dialogue between companies and stakeholders and enables the desired exchange.

particularities

  • Good feasibility: The WIN Charter was specially developed for SMEs and offers unbureaucratic and transparent sustainability management.
  • Local anchoring: In addition to the entrepreneurial anchoring, a local sustainability project is also supported, thereby increasing the regional added value outside of the company.
  • Examination by the public: The reports of the WIN-Charter companies are freely accessible online, the companies can be contacted directly. This promotes trust and dialogue between companies and stakeholders.
  • Free participation: Participation in the WIN Charter is free of charge for companies, apart from the necessary entrepreneurial commitment.

Participating companies

To date, over 200 companies have signed the voluntary commitment (as of April 2020). The companies come from a wide range of industries (e.g. mechanical engineering, automotive, textiles, gastronomy, horticulture, viticulture, energy suppliers, handicrafts, tourism or chemistry) and cover a range of sizes from craft businesses with a few employees to global corporations based in Baden-Württemberg.
