Wacław Orłowski
Wacław Orłowski ([ ˈvat͡swaf ɔrˈwɔfski ]; born January 5, 1945 in Braunau am Inn ) is a former Polish wrestler .
Career
Wacław Orłowski was repatriated to Poland after the war after he was born in Braunau am Inn, where his mother had been evacuated during the war . There he began as a teenager with the sports club Kolejarza Kraków with the wrestling. He later moved to Daliny Mysłowice , Stomil Dębica and Wisłoka Dębica . His coaches in those years were Mieczysław Radoń, Tadeusz Popiołek, Czesław Korzeń, Zygmunt Dmowski and Janusz Traczewski. He focused fully on the Greco-Roman style. The 1.82 meter tall athlete initially wrestled in the middleweight division, but soon switched to the light heavyweight and even the heavyweight division.
Even before he was able to become Polish champion in the senior light heavyweight division for the first time in 1968, he was used in 1967 in Bucharest at the World Middleweight Championship. Thanks to a bye in the first round, a victory over Franz Pötsch from Austria and a draw against Wenko Zinzarow from Bulgaria and the Olympic champion Branislav Simić from Yugoslavia , he surprisingly won one after losing his last fight against Valentin Olenik from the USSR World Cup bronze medal .
1968 Wacław Orłowski started first at the European Championships in Västerås in the light heavyweight division. He lost there against Caj Malmberg from Finland and Nicolae Martinescu from Romania and therefore only ended up in 11th place. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he managed a light heavyweight victory over the Japanese Takeshi Nagano. He lost against goals Hem from Norway and Nikolai Jakowenko from the USSR . The victory over Nagano was enough for 6th place.
In the following years he grew up in Poland , especially in Czesław Kwieciński and Andrzej Skrzydlewski, two extremely strong rivals, so that he could no longer regularly qualify for participation in the international championships.
In 1970 he was again Polish heavyweight champion. This year he stayed with the Polish national wrestling team in preparation for the international championships for three international matches in the Federal Republic of Germany . In Salzgitter and Bad Hersfeld he fought against Lorenz Hecher from Hallbergmoos and won on points in Kassel over Karl-Heinz Gerdsmeier from Aschaffenburg .
Then went to the start at the European Championships in Berlin (East). He won there over Jürgen Klinge from the GDR and wrestled against the Soviet starter Wassili Merkulow . A defeat against Marin Kolew from Bulgaria prevented another medal win. He had to be satisfied with the ungrateful 4th place. Wacław Orłowski was also used at the World Championships in Edmonton in 1970 . There he managed a victory over Hassan Ali Bechara from Lebanon and a draw against Per Svensson from Sweden , who became world champion at this event . But he lost to Ferenc Kiss from Hungary and Stefan Petrow from Bulgaria and came in 6th place.
Wacław Orłowski's last start at an international championship was at the 1971 World Cup in Sofia . In the heavyweight division he won there over Khalid from Iraq and Gıyasettin Yılmaz from Turkey , but lost to Lorenz Hecher and Marin Kolew and thus placed himself in 6th place.
For participation from the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he could no longer prevail in Poland against Andrzej Skrzydlewski .
Wacław Orłowski ended his international wrestling career in 1973. At the national level, however, he was still at the start for a few years and in 1973 he was again Polish heavyweight champion. After his active time as a wrestler, who had completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic in his youth, trained as a sports teacher. From 1978 he worked as a wrestling trainer at BKS Bochnia . But he soon changed his profession and became a businessman.
