Tore Hem (born November 12, 1945 in Oslo ) is a former Norwegian wrestler .

Career

Tore Hem began wrestling as a teenager in Oslo. He soon became a member of the then leading Norwegian wrestling club Sportsklubben 09 Oslo . He focused entirely on the Greco-Roman style and won a total of 20 Norwegian championship titles in all age groups (youth, juniors, seniors) in the course of his career. Between 1968 and 1976 he was Norwegian champion nine times in a row among seniors. He was also one of the first Norwegian wrestlers who rose to the expanded international wrestling class after 1945 and won medals at international championships.

In 1965 he started in Tampere for the first time at a world championship. As a young athlete, he suffered defeats in the light heavyweight division against Ferenc Kiss from Hungary and the Japanese Kenjirō Hiraki and ended up in 15th place. He fared not much better at the European Championships in Essen in 1966 , because there, too, he lost his fights in the light heavyweight division against Aimo Mypenpää from Finland and Czesław Kwieciński from Poland and only reached 14th place.

Tore Hem then cut far more successfully at the European Championships in Minsk in 1967 , where he finished 6th. a. against the strong Yugoslav Josip Čorak wrestled a draw and at the world championship of the same year in Bucharest , where he even finished 5th in the light heavyweight division. After a 9th place at the European Championships in Västerås in 1968 , where he lost two absolute world class wrestlers to Bojan Radew from Bulgaria and Per Svensson from Sweden , he did well again with a 5th place at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City . There he defeated Caj Malmberg from Finland and Waclaw Ostrowski from Poland and fought against Per Svensson in a draw.

He then showed himself further improved at the 1969 World Cup in Mar del Plata , which took place that year before the European Championship. He fought there, after a weight class reform by the FILA in the heavyweight division, u. a. against the Swedes Lennart Eriksson and the Romanian Nicolae Martinescu and came after a defeat against Stefan Petrow from Bulgaria on an excellent 4th place. At the European Championships in Modena in 1969 , Tore Hem took advantage of the fact that almost all Eastern Bloc countries were not at the start there and won an EM silver medal with four wins and one defeat against Josip Čorak, to whom he was defeated in the final on points .

In 1970 Tore Hem missed the international championships due to injury. At the World Championships in 1971 in Sofia he was back at the start and came with wins over Daniel Vernik from Argentina a . Willi Williams from the United States and defeats against Vasily Merkulow from the USSR and the reigning world champion Per Svensson in 8th place. In 1972 he disappointed at the European Championships in Katowice , where he finished 9th after defeats against Fredi Albrecht from the GDR and Andrzej Skrzydlewski from Poland, but achieved an excellent result again with 6th place at the Olympic Games in Munich in the heavyweight division . He beat the 1970 world champion Per Svensson and the Finns Aimo Mypenpää . He lost against Christo Ignatow from Bulgaria and Nikolai Jakowenko from the USSR.

Tore Hem also achieved a very good result at the 1975 European Championship in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . He won there against Zdenek Chara from Czechoslovakia and Markku Virtanen from Finland and got an excellent 5th place. Even better, he retired from the 1976 European Championships in Leningrad, where he even defeated two wrestlers from the strong Eastern Bloc countries with Kamen Losanow Goranow from Bulgaria and Andrzej Skrzydlewski from Poland. He came in third place behind Nikolai Balboschin from the USSR and Nicolae Martinescu , against whom he had lost in the finals, and won his second medal at an international championship.

At the end of his career, Tore Hem reached the heavyweight Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976 again with victories over Fredi Albrecht u. Yasunari Akiyama from Japan and after defeats against Brad Rheingans from the United States and Kamen Losanow Goranow a very good 5th place.
