Location of Wackersleben in Saxony-Anhalt

Wackersleben is a district of the municipality of Hötensleben in the Börde district in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany).

Geographical location

Wackersleben is located north of the Great Break , a 50 km long lowland that extends from the Oker in the west to the Bode in the east. At the western edge of the village boundary , the Schöninger Aue flows into the Große Bruch and forms the state border with Lower Saxony . About 8.5 km north-north-west of Wackersleben is the city of Schöningen , 15 km east-southeast the city of Oschersleben (Bode) and 20 km (as the crow flies ) south of the city of Halberstadt .

history

The place Wackersleben appears for the first time in 932 in a chronicle of the city of Goslar . The coat of arms shows three red bulrushes, which indicate the nearby Großer Bruch, a fish that is reminiscent of the former ponds that monks of the Hamersleben monastery tended .

The village was wiped out in the Thirty Years War . After the reconstruction, it was destroyed again by fires (1683 and 1737). Alt-Wackersleben was in the direction of Hötensleben or Haarstrang ( 145  m ) on the elevation located there. The new town emerged after the fire in 1737.

The St. Abdo and Sennes Church in Wackersleben - a neo-Gothic brick building  - was consecrated in 1877.

Wackersleben was not damaged by the Second World War (1939-1945). It is mistakenly marked as the location of a Boeing B-17 that crashed during the war. This has not been proven and is unfortunately due to the Allied forces' lack of geographic knowledge. Furthermore, Wackersleben did not have an airfield; this was also recorded in US Army records.

Until the division of Germany, the Oschersleben - Braunschweig railway ran 3 km south of Wackersleben (Gunsleben station in what is now the municipality of Am Großen Bruch ). Gunsleben was the end of the railway line until it was closed in 1997.

In the GDR era, Wackersleben was located in front of the five-kilometer restricted area on the inner-German border . The checkpoint for entering the restricted area was shortly after entering the town in the direction of Ohrsleben.

Wackersleben was to get an additional landfill in the 1990s. However, this was rejected through joint work by citizens, because the village is already strongly influenced by old landfills. One of the landfills is located in Neustadt, near the new tractor washing line or the old LPG animal production facility , and the other a little further west.

Until January 1, 2010, Wackersleben was an independent municipality. 707 inhabitants lived on an area of 15.85 km² (December 31, 2008). On January 2, 2010, Wackersleben was incorporated into the municipality of Hötensleben . Ina Wenzel was the last mayor of Wackersleben.

education

Wackersleben had a secondary or high school and a primary school. As a result of the educational reform and the closure of the site, the secondary school was closed first and, a few years later, the primary school. Today the primary school building is vacant and the secondary school building houses an old people's and nursing home.

economy

In Wackersleben there is a production facility for chicken eggs and a turkey fattening facility. The village is characterized by agriculture. The Bernd Bassüner joinery and Elektro Otte are also located here. A general practitioner and a dentist are also based here.
