Wahlen is a municipality in the district of Laufen in the canton of Basel-Landschaft in Switzerland .

history

When the village church was being built in 1837, a burial mound was found which historians attribute to the Bronze Age . In 1927 stone box graves from the 8th century came to light. At the time, the settlement was on a Roman road that led from Val Terbi in French- speaking Switzerland over the Plattenpass am Blauen to near Basel . The place name was derived from the Latin Vallum - that means a wall or a fortification. There is a first documentary mention from the second half of the 12th century under the place name Waltenen . At that time, Pope Alexander III. a blacklist of the knowledgeable enemies of St. Alban's Monastery He gave the Bishop of Basel instructions to exclude them from the church fellowship and to forbid the holding of church services in the Zähringer duchy. Among them were the von Ramstein brothers, who claimed land in Waltenen for themselves.

From the Thirty Years' War contest was severely affected. The residents found refuge in the neighboring village of Grindel . In 1815 Wahlen was assigned to the canton of Bern and has been part of the Laufen district ever since .
