The Waldnaab Valley is a nature reserve near Falkenberg in the Upper Palatinate district of Tirschenreuth in Bavaria .

location

The nature reserve is located 2.6 kilometers southwest of Falkenberg and 5.6 kilometers north of Windischeschenbach . The area thus belongs to the Tirschenreuth district and the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district . A small portion is part of the Nature Park Northern Upper Palatinate Forest and Protected Landscape LSG Bohemian hills in the western district of Neustadt adWaldnaab . It belongs entirely to the FFH area Waldnaab Valley between Tirschenreuth and Windisch-Eschenbach .

description

Of the approximately 182 ha area, 29 ha are located in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district and 153 ha in the Tirschenreuth district. The protected area is named after the river Waldnaab . The protected area extends from the hammer mill to the mouth of the Frombach . The uplift of the Falkenberg granite plateau has led to increased erosion activity in the Waldnaab. The 6 km long section of the valley, which is protected here, is of particular beauty and character because of the sea of boulders in the water, its bizarre weathered forms and steep granite rocks.

Geotopes

In the nature reserve are the two geotopes designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment , NSG Waldnaabtal SW von Falkenberg (377R013) and Sauerbrunnen in the NSG Waldnaabtal ENE von Ödwalpersreuth (377Q001). Here in the Falkenberg granite massif lies a ravine-like river valley . Erosion coves and grinding marks in the rock walls show how the river ate its way into the subsoil relatively quickly as the area began to lift. To the north of the second geotope, the Sauerbrunnen , the Waldnaab breakthrough can be found as a particularly narrow place with many boulders in the river bed . The Sauerbrunnen is a publicly accessible mineral fountain. On the hiking trail above the log cabin, a spring with sulfur and water rises. carbonated water that colors the surrounding granite yellowish-reddish. Around Tirschenreuth there are a number of such sourlings , which are associated with the beginning of volcanic activity. Earthquakes and the subsequent extraction of hot, sulphurous water from springs in the stone forest are historically documented.

The nature reserve was designated on July 22, 1950 for the first time and on November 24, 1976 with an amended ordinance.
