Today's church was built as the successor to a late Gothic church, whose choir was taken over as the Fugger's crypt chapel . The Fugger family acquired the Schmiechen Hofmark in the southeast of Augsburg together with Schmiechen Castle from Emperor Maximilian I in the early 16th century . The Hofmark remained in the possession of the Fuggers for 300 years (until 1809), the pilgrimage church is still reminiscent of the Counts: In the stucco on the choir arch you can see the Fugger's coat of arms from the lily in a cartouche .

When the new church was built in the early 17th century, the eastern orientation was abandoned and the new church was built in a north-south direction. In 1710/11 the tower was rebuilt by Michael Natter. From 1754–1756, Franz Xaver Schmuzer and Franz Martin Kuen redesigned the interior in the spirit of the Rococo . At the same time a sacristy was added at the end of the choir . In 1777 the crypt chapel was raised and oval windows were added.

Since 1655, the "Kappelfest" has been celebrated annually on the first Sunday in July, which the believers in the area associate with an appeal to the church. In 1985 an exterior renovation of the pilgrimage church was carried out. In 2011, Auxiliary Bishop Anton Losinger inaugurated the newly created Way of the Cross at the Kappelfest . The way of the cross ends at the pilgrimage church Maria Kappel with the 15th station.

During a stability test in 2013, deficiencies were identified, which were remedied in a renovation measure from 2018 to 2019 except for the church tower.

description

The exterior is kept simple and is only structured by the window openings with their arched ends. The choir (crypt chapel) of the previous church jumps out to the east. The slender tower stands in the corner between the crypt chapel and the nave. An octagon with pilasters and an onion dome sits on a square base .

The choir has moved in, so it is narrower than the nave. The low sacristy annex concludes. The simple buttresses on the old choir are reminiscent of the medieval chapel .

From 1754, Franz Xaver Schmuzer decorated the festive interior with a subtle stucco decoration. The frescoes are by Franz Martin Kuen. In 1754 the master painted the choir fresco with Mary as intercessor of Christianity. On the large nave fresco from 1755 you can see Esther before Ahasver . The cartouches show the helpful Mother of God after the invocations of the Lauretan litany .

The high altar made of stucco marble was again created by Franz Xaver Schmuzer with the help of Maximilian Grueber (carvings) and Jakob Gerstens ( antependium and tabernacle ). The miraculous image is a Gothic Pietà of the " soft style " (around 1430). Christ of Maria Magdalena appears on the stucco relief in the extract (essay) .

The side altars (1770) are by Maximilian Grueber and have sculptures by Johann Leithner and altar leaves by Franz Anton Anwander . On the left sheet, Anwander painted Mary as Queen of Heaven with St. Francis , the Holy Family is depicted on the right.

The chapel altar and the pulpit are also works by Gruebers (1773 and around 1770), who carved the choir stalls and communion grids around 1755 . Two figures of the hll. Antonius von Padua and Leonhard are attributed to Lorenz Luidl .

The Rococo furnishings are complemented by the oil paintings of the Stations of the Cross (Franz Anton Anwander, 1773).
